If we stay in a hotel for one night after landing at terminal 5, would there be a shuttle from airport to a nearby hotel?
Also, how to get back to Heathrow to pick up a rental car the following morning. This I know is safer than driving after doing a flight from the US without sleep

There are hotels right at the airport if you really don't want to get a car immediately. There even looks to be one at Terminal 5.

Shuttle or not depends on the hotel. When researching hotels look for ones that have shuttle service. If you’ve driven in the UK previously and aren’t driving a long distance, there’s no reason you couldn’t make the drive. Others will have a different opinion.
Another factor is the flight arrival time. If it arrives later in the day an overnight at a hotel makes sense. It it lands early to mid-morning then you’re just sitting around until hotel check in that is generally 3pm.

Most of the hotels aerving Heathrow are situated on Bath Road. I think most have done away with their own shuttles but there is a bus service that runs between Bath Road and the airport. This bus is not a free service.
To get back to the airport for the car pickup simply take the bus to the airport terminal and follow the signs for car rental.
