Car or Bus or Taxi? (Surrey)

In July we're going to be visiting friends out in Windleshan, Surrey for a couple of days. My wife wants to rent a car for that short time period so that we can go out to eat with them or what not (their car is too small for us + kids). I'm really hesitant to rent a car for so little time, but never having been to the area I'm not sure if we can do with out it.

-I know that we could call a taxi for quick trips (let's say 4-5 trips total). Would it be worth spending the money on that?

-Is it easy to get a public transportation from out in Windleshan to London? Either taking a bus, or walking to a tube, or something of that sort? (Oyster card?)

-Is there a good website or app that I could use to help figure out where/when I can go places?

If renting a car is the best option, I'll bite the bullet, but I'm having a hard time justifying it for just a few days. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you mean Windlesham?

If so, it is a fairly small village in Surrey with Bagshot being the nearest railway station, a couple of miles or so away (itself only a village /town of about 5,000) with a service to London two times an hour. There is a bus that trundles round the area about once every two hours daytime, weekdays only.

So it should be relatively easy to get there and back to London, but not a whole lot of public transport whilst you are there.

Yup, Windlesham....slight typo there, sorry. We're staying with friends who are living there, so getting around town isn't as much of a concern. It's getting to other places without too much inconvenience that we're concerned about.

Hi Jon,

I know the area slightly from my army days but am not an expert on the area. I can only give you my general advice which has been reinforced this weekend.

This weekend I took a short break in the London area (for the D Day commemorations) whilst at breakfast in the hotel I met an American couple who had been given advice on here to get the train to there destinations in the UK. They didn't want to plan to far ahead and spent a little longer in London than planned. My point is, they then tried to get a train but found it massively expensive. They decided on multiple changes of busses and taxis and were not happy at all. I suggested a hire car but they said it was to late they had booked their bus.

You know, driving (apart from Central London) in the UK is so easy and fun! It gives so much flexibility especially with the weather and getting close to destinations. Why oh why do Americans have such an aversion to driving in the UK ...? It's easy, flexible, and your not wasting time waiting for public transport.

I really wish this couple had spoken to me on here before they had ruined their holiday. However they listened to other people who apparently didn't own a car ...my advice always unless you are visiting Central London is to hire a car and have the freedom independence and flexibility it gives!

Thanks John. My primary thing against renting cars is 'its just another hassle', but having reviewed our plans and what not, it looks like we'll be renting one. Which actually opens up the chance to go visit some extra areas so yaaay.

I'm sure it'll take only one near death experience to remember to drive on the correct side of the road.

I would like to say don't be worried about taking a Taxi once in a while in London. We ended up using the Taxi's for our trip to and from the Airport because of hauling luggage through the Tube system. And in the end we actually spent less than our budget for this trip (we tried to be careful because of the exchange rate), and so glad we treated ourselves to any easy ride with a great Taxi driver!
