We will be arriving at Tillbury via a Viking cruise ship in early April and would like to research possible private transportation to Heathrow. Viking transfer is an option, but we would like to check out other possibilities for comparison purposes. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.
Car hire in the UK would mean a self drive car, which I assume is not what you mean. What you want is a car service. There are a number of operators - BlackBerry Cars are often recommended for example.
You need to be prepared for an expensive ride. Tilbury to Heathrow via the M25, which for most days will be the quickest route, is 71 miles. Right now as I type at 20.40 here, it would take about 90 minutes. But for once in London, the public transport option is complex and probably a lot slower.
If I was doing this by public transport (and I've done it to Euston far too many times) I would take C2C from Tilbury Town to West Ham, cross platform change to the District Line, take that to Hammersmith, cross platform change to the Piccadilly line for Heathrow.
This is contactless throughout, the fare is £10.50 Off Peak, £13.50 Peak.
That fare includes the #99 Shuttle bus every 30 minutes from the port to Tilbury Town station.
To Euston I have to go downstairs to swipe out, and then swipe back in (a ticketing system quirk) but that doesn't apply to you, going out to Zone 6.
