Newcastle station is unusual in the UK in having a car hire office on the station- for Enterprise, Alamo and National- may be useful to someone.
EDIT- The office is open Monday to Friday 0800 to 1700, and Saturday 0800 to 1500

Thank you, that's useful to me. We don't know when yet, but our next trip to England will be to continue our "Last Kingdom" tour. We'll start in London, and head to York and eventually make our way to Bamburgh (Bebbanburgh to you Last Kingdom fans). We haven't looked at it seriously yet, but I'd like to limit renting a car until I really need to. I thought I may need to do it in York for the remainder of the trip, but your post makes me think that Newcastle may be a possibility.

Yes, we used it a few years ago, and it was super convenient. Just a tip, those 3 rental offices are a little way to your left as you come out of the main station exit. It wasn’t clear on the station map online, so we were relieved to find them so close.
