Canterbury Cathedral Scaffolding

How much of the building, inside and out, is still covered by scaffolding ?

I was there a couple of weeks ago (May 22). The whole west end and around to the North entrance was in scaffold as they work on the roof but according to the Cathedral docent I had for a tour they had taken down some of the higher parts around the towers. The whole roof inside is hidden with wood planking as a safety measure from bits falling on to people -her words.

The day I was there they were hanging an amazing sculpture of blown glass in the nave. I know this is finished as a friend was there a week after me and posted pictures.

Do be sure to see the new stained glass installations in the Cloister. On the RS tour we toured the Stained Glass studio and met the artist who designed and made the one with waving wheat. It’s beautiful.

Hey I’m Pam’s friend! Hi, Pam! I had to look at my pictures to see what’s under the scaffolding but on the outside the area above the door you enter and about that half of the cathedral is under scaffolding. That part also has a fence around it. On the inside there’s an area around a stained glass wall with scaffolding but you can still see the stained glass. I was lucky to see the sculpture Pam described installed completely. It was a bummer to have so much under scaffolding but it really didn’t spoil anything for me.

Hahaha...didn’t want to out you!!

Even with scaffolding you can get plenty of pictures without it and I agree it doesn’t really diminish the visit.

Interestingly, it seems the docents were invited to go up on the scaffolding inside and outside to see some of the conservation work and see some parts that haven’t been uncovered for years. The ones I talked to were thrilled with the opportunity.
