Canadian to England

Planning a trip to England first 10 days of May.
Want to tour Bedford Kempston area to track down relatives (have contact with some already) and locations ancestors were born, died, buried. But we also want to take in some sights, activities, etc.
Would like to spend a few days in London. Possibly hire a local guide.
Will take in Stonehenge, and looking for more ideas.
Last six days will be up to Scotland.
Will have a car, but probably take train into London.

When you say "Last six days will be up to Scotland", does that mean you have 10 days for England and then will go to Scotland for 6 days, or does "the first 10 days of May" cover both countries ?

Have 5 days to a week in London and cover Stonehenge as a day trip from here. Bedford could be covered as a day trip from London or you could spend a couple of nights here. York would be an obvious stop en route to Scotland for 2 nights.

What do you want to see in Scotland? Have 3 nights ie 2 full days in Edinburgh then hire a car and visit the Highlands. Ideally fly open jaw rather than having to waste half a day back tracking to London.

Kempston, and especially the Marston Vale has changed a lot in the last 50 years.

When did the ones who left leave? Are they Italian by any chance?

Close Relatives left Bedford area years ago, but in contact with relatives who live there now and are going to show us around. We are planning on being in London via train from Bedford morning of May 6 to morning of May 8. We are considering hiring a guide - any suggestions? Any central hotels and located to a train station we would be arriving on?

I somewhat disagree with the advice of day trips. I was in London in the fall of 18 and did a couple of day trips and they were OK. In my case we did not go beyond London except for a couple day trips. One to Windsor and one to Bath and Stonehenge

But if are planing in traveling outside of London then I would avoid the day trips. Traffic into and out of London is crazy and it eats up way to much of your time. Add in getting to and from the location your trip is departing from and it just is not the best option.
Don’t get me wrong. If you are staying in London hotels the whole time then fine do a day trip or two. But if you are going to stay outside London then just add whatever days you planned on for the day trips to you stay outside the city.
For instance take a train to Windsor and pick up you car there or go to Bath and use that to visit Stonehenge,
That way you avoid the traffic around London on each trip. It can eat your time. It did not do nice things for our bath trip.
But to each thier own
