Canadian driving in Uk insurance

We have booked a rental car from London for 8 days. Keep getting mixed information about car insurance. Does any Canadian out there know if your car insurance from home works on rental cars in UK? We have Roadstar and heard that is all one needs. Thank you!

You really need to contact your insurance company about this. Think of the consequences if you don't get the correct info.

Thanks Norma. Yes we have contacted our insurance company but got a vague answer. Perhaps it was a new agent. Will continue to explore.

Unfortunately , the world tends to work on vague answers , What you really need to do is pull out your WRITTEN policy and go through it with a fine toothed comb . Only what is there in black and white is the definitive answer as to what your coverage provides .When in doubt , purchasing ancillary insurance is the safest way . While the insurance sold by the rental agencies seems high priced , the practice of splitting the rental and insurance fees is a form of what I call " counting money twice " -- it all goes into the same pocket . As an example , so you can compare apples to apples , on my recent trip to the UK , my rental cost $70 USD per day . This included TOTAL coverage ( liability , theft , damage , including glass and tires , and zero excess ( deductible ) . This was AVIS ( via AARP - much better than standard rate ) . This coming Autumn , I have a car for a week in Northeastern France before ending in Paris at an identical rate .

You mentioned Roadstar - are you in BC? If so, get in touch with ICBC directly.

I have never hired a car anywhere in the world where my own insurance would cover me! Cars in the UK automatically come with compulsory insurance and I am not aware of any opt-out.

Car insurance in North America runs somewhat differently compared with the UK. Here very few people have insurance that covers them across any car, so hire companies generally include it in the rates - or more accurately a CDW which strictly speaking isn't insurance. If someone says they aren't from the UK the rate quoted usually doesn't include CDW, and may not be that much less than the inclusive rate different to residents.
