Can only choose one, Bath or York?

We are staying for ten days in London and desire to make one overnight trip to either Bath or York.
Your counsel will help us make the selection.
We will be in country from July 2 - 11.
Thanks for your help!

I am a big fan of York, love the York Minister and the Shambles. I have not been to Bath but plan to one day.

Tough choice. I would lean towards York, for that short a time. Most of the historic sites are in a compact area.

Depends mostly on what you like to see/do when visiting a new city. Bath is a lovely town with Georgian architecture, the Roman baths, a beautiful Abbey and, of course, the Jane Austen connection. York is famous for it's Minster (cathedral), it's old city walls, the National Railway museum, and the Jorvik Viking Center.

Nancy is absolutely right, you need to choose based on what most interests you. She didn't mention the Shambles in York, which is a Medieval street lined with half timbered buildings leaning every which way. If you remember Diagon Alley from Harry Potter, you get the idea. The cathedral is massive and one of the best in England. There are also some forts and old walls.

Bath is a more Neo-Classical city with staid old stone buildings. The bridge over the river is famous for being lined with shops, about the only other one other than Ponte Vecchio in Florence. The Roman baths retain some Roman era excavations and sculptures and a nice museum. Nearby is Stonehenge if you are driving from London.

I would pick York over Bath. I would also visit the National Rail Museum there (free entry).

Been to both and I like York much more. Hard to explain why... the physical lay out, easier to walk everywhere, so many things to see and experience there that were more gripping and fascinating for me, the look and feel of it, the history interested me more...

I would vote for York over Bath anyday. Bath's buildings are attractive, but York has a wider variety of things to see.

Had a day trip to Bath and then two days in York, and really preferred York. I enjoyed Bath, but wasn’t interested in more than the six hours there, whereas I need to get back to York and see more someday.

I've been to Bath once in many many years. York several times, most recently the day before yesterday.

It’s very very close, but I would pick Bath for the Roman Baths and beautiful architecture.

Both are great places to visit, but I would pick York.

You can see Bath in one day, but York takes about three days.
