Camping at The Open

We are headed to The Open 7/17 -20. The thought of camping on the green Is both exciting and terrifying to this retiree! It seems that they provide a tent and a light. We need to find a place to get, sleeping bags, and other supplies we might need that we can't bring from home.

Then, we will be exploring Scotland, England and Ireland for 10 days. We are seeking suggestions for festivals or events we might attend, and must see or do attractions. One person I would love to connect with is Eric Faulkner from the Bay City Rollers. It has always been my dream to go to Scotland and to meet him. If you know to reach him, please let me know.

Finally, we are arriving and departing from Dublin. We have visited before and seen many important sites. Trinity College, Giants Causeway, Blarney Castle, Cliffs of Moher and the Jamison factory was not to be missed! This time, I would like to visit Cork and Limerick, where I understand my Danaher relatives came from.

Thanks for any information!

Who provides a tent?

I’m assuming you mean the British Open golf tournament held this year at Royal Liverpool course.

So why are camping overnight?

You should Google Eric Faulkner. Who knows maybe he still performs somewhere.

I would assume that you are flying in from Dublin to Liverpool. On your way from Liverpool Airport to Hoylake you have to pass through Central Liverpool. In the City Centre there is a branch of 'Cotswold Outdoors'- a well known (in the UK) camping and outdoors specialist. You can order online and 'click and collect' at the store.
Hoylake is not a big place, but has some quite nice independent stores as well as your standard well known names. It sounds as if you are camping quite close to the centre, so food and drink wise you should have no difficulty. Otherwise there is the big town of Birkenhead a few stops back across the Wirral Peninsula.
One festival you may be interested in which would be at the end of your touring is Kendal Calling in the Lake District- actually at Lowther Deer Park just outside Penrith (I know, when it started the festival was at Kendal, but it outgrew the town) on the eastern fringe of the Lake District.

Claudia, The Open has a set up of a tent, air mattress and light. We have to provide the rest. My husband is enamored with the idea of camping right on the green, so we will wake up and be right there in the middle of the action. Also, accomodations are so expensive there, that he likes the economical aspect to camping. I can suffer for a few days for his pleasure. We will stay in hotels, b&b's and hostels the rest of the time.

isn31c,
Thanks for your reply. You have great suggestions. I will look into those options. The Open has food and entertainment in the camping compound, so I think we are set there. We won't have a car until we leave The Open. Then we will rent one for touring Scotland and England.

My husband and I are huge golf fans. The Open is one of our favorite tournaments to watch because of the links venues. I hope you’ll come back and tell us about your experience camping on the green.

That looks fun. Have you seen the glamping option which comes fully furnished with everything you need? It’s probably work out cheaper and definitely more convenient.

I seem to recall from press reports a little while back that Eric Faulkner had been seriously ill and does not perform anymore. Prior to that he appeared to be more interested in politics than music, being somewhat left of Jeremy Corbyn.
