Camera bags in London Museums?

We'll be in London next May and one of our planned sites is St. Paul's Cathedral. I know they don't allow photos inside but we were wondering what happens when we show up with our camera bags.

Can we just promise not to take pictures? We successfully did that at a couple of museums in Vienna a few years ago (we kept our cameras zipped up IN the bags).

I've never had a problem with my camera hanging around my neck, even in Vienna which was stricter than anywhere else I've been.

You might get a quick bag search on the way in, any bag you have, not targeted at camera bags, but no problems taking camera bags with you.

If in the outside upper galleries (stone or golden, not whispering), photo taking is allowed, just not inside the cathedral.

They don't confiscate cameras from you as you go in, you're just not allowed to use them.

Thanks for the assurances. I recently noticed that the Dome Climb can be done in stages, so thanks to Mike for the advice about the outside photo op in the Stone Gallery. I may not make it all the way to the top.
