Hello, we are staying near London Waterloo but I think we take the train from Kings Cross to Cambridge (from reading other forum posts). When I had a look it gave me three train stations to choose from for Cambridge and I don't know which one to choose: CBG, CMH, CMB. Any kind input and advice is appreciated!
You want CBG which is the main station and about a mile from the city centre (20 minutes walk).
CMB is the code for Cambridge North which is about 2.5 miles from the centre.
Edit for Badger - Cambridge South station is due to open in 2025 and the code will be CMS
You can find a full list of station codes here. (Hours of fun for the kiddies.)
CMH seems to be the station code for Cwmbach Station in Wales, so I'm not quite sure how that got included in the options...
The one that is closest to your destination. Although you should only have two to choose from, I don't think Cambridge south is open yet.
If you write the actual names of the stations we might be able to give you more advice, I have no idea what those letter codes mean and I guess I'm not the only one.
CBG is Cambridge- the station for Central Cambridge- the one the vast majority of tourists would use.
CMB is Cambridge North- a much newer station in the northern suburbs of the city- mainly for Commuters, but has a guided busway back into the City Centre Bus Station. But there is a Novotel Hotel there as well. So not impossible a tourist would use it. If a transport enthusiast then someone might want to use it just for the fairly rare experience of riding a guided busway. It goes 16 miles out of the city to a place called St Ives and is the longest guided busway in the world after the one in Adelaide, Australia.
For CMH you must have meant to type CBH- Cambridge Heath. That is a London Overground (suburban) station in East London- about 40 miles from Cambridge, so you don't want that one.
Oh, and sometime in 2025 hopefully there will also be Cambridge South!- a new station under construction.
Thanks- just the information I needed! :-)
Just understand how rare it is for people to use airport type 3 letter codes for train stations. Sure, locals use them to get a quicker response from apps and webpages on a regular journey - typing NMP to EUS is faster than Northampton to Euston - but generally most non-anoraks use the station names. And the apps and webpages will help you by filling in.
So you are interested in Kings Cross (or London Kings Cross) to Cambridge or Cambridge North (unusually).
Fastest way to get there is by tube, Northern Line (Charing Cross Branch) Waterloo to Leicester Square then Piccadilly line to Kings Cross St Pancras or Northern Line to Warren Street then Victoria Line to Kings Cross St Pancras. The very fastest nonstops from Kings Cross to Cambridge are at xx:42 and xx:12 taking just 48 minutes.
You can walk into the centre or take a local bus; or right in the vicinity of the station is a BBQ restaurant (Smokeworks, which incorporates Slingers where you can practice your darts) and the Cambridge University Botanic Garden (world class).
Thanks for the information about Cambridge south!
