We will be landing at Heathrow in June 2018 at about noon local time. We are staying our first night in Windsor and would like to take public transport to Windsor. I have found a website that says we can take the #71 or 77 bus straight to Windsor from Terminal 5, and I believe it is operated by First Bus Service. I can't tell how old the information on the website is though. I found a different website that says to take First Bus #8, but it doesn't say which terminal the bus departs from. Can anyone tell me which is correct? Or if there is another (easier) way to get straight from Heathrow to Windsor I would appreciate that information as well! Our hotel (Crown & Cushion) is right across the bridge in Eton, so we'd like to be dropped off within a 10 minute walk from there.
Does it have to be public transport? I took a prebooked car service in the opposite direction--from Eton to Heathrow--for £17 two months ago. Two well regarded locally based car services are 5star and Windsor Cars. Email your hotel and see if they have a particular company they do business with.
The bus route is 8 - even Transport for London can't get that right on their maps.
The current timetables are half way down this page
they go to Terminal 5 bus/tube interchange, I believe there is a free shuttle between terminals. But you would need to recheck around easter next year, things can change especially weekends and evenings.
First renumbered its buses in this area a while back - the '7' series from Heathrow was how it used to be until about 3 months ago. Nothing ages quicker than bus information, so it is best not to rely on unofficial or personal experience sites.
The current summary page for all airport services operated by First is here: https://www.firstgroup.com/berkshire-thames-valley/routes-and-maps/airport-services
We took this bus 6 years ago, when it had a different number. We caught it right outside the arrivals hall at T5----the correct stop was well-signed. Bought a ticket from the driver and told him where we wanted to disembark, so he could let us know the right spot.
It looks like the cheapest ticket is £6.50 each so you might want to compare with a pre-booked car service.
We took a cab, 15 minute ride.
Just take a cab, it'll cost about the same as 2 tickets on the bus and you'll get dropped off in front of your hotel. I used Windsor Cars back in April but the lesson I learned is to call them when you arrive as that was much cheaper than arranging for it in advance which cost us about £35 since we had to pay for Heathrow parking for the car. Upon our return to Heathrow, we called one to our B&B and it was only £16.
