We are two mature backpackers looking at doing a 4 week trip around the UK next year; obviously in low season. We have looked at various accom websites but even the hostels listed seem to be out of our budget. Question is: last time I was there, some years ago, you could find the little "Mum and Dad" B&B's where people were just renting out a spare room or two - nothing fancy. At that time they could be located through the local tourist info offices in the town or at the local train station.
Is this sort of accom still available and easy to find? We are used to staying in basic accom so don't need anything fancy, just a bed and shower. Neither of us drives so we will be travelling by train and bus.
the independent hostel guide,"the bluebook" lists about 500 indies. They tend to be cheaper than official hostels and more easy going. they also list bunkhouses and camping barns which tend to be in the national parks.
People letting bnb on a casual basis may well not be listed at Tourist Info Centres as theres a fee for inspection
You may already be aware of this site. http://www.bootsnall.com/. In days of yore available inexpensive lodging options could be found above pubs and occasionally on church bulletin boards.
I'd keep researching as the Internet has done wonders bringing together the global community. Independent travel bloggers are especially good resources.
