Britrail pass vs day tickets

Hi there,
I need a sanity check for an upcoming trip.
I will be in London late July on business and my wife will be joining me and is planning on keeping herself busy during the day while I am working.
She wants to go to Bath for a day.
We will be staying at Heathrow T5.
I've checked prices for buying individual tickets and also a Britrail pass and it appears that the pass would be a better choice but am unsure if I am not fully aware of any gotcha's.

For the times and day she wants to go to Bath, the rail ticket price is £55 to Bath and £33.50 return.
A Heathrow Express advance ticket to get from T5 to Paddinton to catch the train is 15 each way.
So, the total would be £118.50.
If she buys a 3 day consecutive Britrail Southwest Pass it appears that she can use it to get from T5 to Paddinton and then to Bath and then do the return and the total would be £127.00.
Although more expensive to buy pass and only do this trip, it seems obvious that travelling on a 2nd and/or 3rd day would change this.

She has looked at a coach but the travel time was too much and though it seems counter-intutative to head East to catch a train and then head West it appears to be the most time efficient manner to accomplish.
She is not interested in traveling for the absolute lowest cost and also no need to travel in first class but balance transit times and available times once at the destination as this and the others would be 'day trips' as we have a hotel.

Thanks so much,
Mark

With all train fares in the Uk the devil is in the detail. Do you have dates?

It's almost certain that she will be able to get to Bath for less than your price. For a start there is no need to buy tickets on the over priced HEX. Whilst it might still make sense to go via Paddington there are two other ways to get to Bath - take the Elizabeth Line to Hayes & Harlington, then a train to Reading and change to a Bath train, or take the Rail/Air coach from Heathrow to reading for a train. I just priced up a train on 14/8 on the first route leaving after 9am, for £87.10 return. I suspect others more familiar with the route could beat this but it does depend on dates.

Are you staying at T5 because it's convenient for your work? If not, it doesn't make much sense to stay there for anything above a day or two. there is a premium placed on train journeys out of Heathrow so staying off airport would make your wife's trips cheaper and quite possible easier.

To give an example, if you were staying in Windsor, just by Heathrow, your wife could do the same trip for £41.

She was looking at fares for 23 July but 22-25 July would also be options.

I'm staying at T5 that entire week due to work.

Thanks for the other options, we'll take a look into those.

I would like to suggest that taking a National Express Bus directly from Heathrow to Bath will be the least expensive option for your wife. I have done this trip and it was quite easy. If you are looking at saving money, then skip the Heathrow Express!!!
