Britrail pass or railcard

Hi,

I am traveling to London next week with my 16 yr old. My husband and son will reach london on 11th and go to Taunton the same day. They plan to stay there till 17th. We reach on the 15th and go straight to Taunton. 16th to Bath and back from Taunton. 17th everyone goes to London, Harry Potter tour on 18th from Victoria coach. Go to the airport at night, stay there and catch the morning flight back to US. The railcard I was looking at family and friends does not offer any discount if I travel with my daughter. So am thinking if Britrail pass is better. Everything seems so confusing since we are not all together all the time. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

To find rail fares & schedules in Britain - go to > www.nationalrail.co.uk
On longer trips, cheaper advance fares can be found for specific trains - you will find the best deals about 11 weeks ahead when they get loaded to the system. Obviously, you have left it too late to get the best deals but you still should be able to pre-book for advance tickets on specific trains. (Compare the prices with turn up and pay on the day).

You will most likely be using the trains of this company:>https://www.gwr.com
- although you may find you are using a Cross Country train between Bristol & Taunton.

So, compare the fares with the daily rate for Britrail. (Most people consider Britrail not to be good value but it does give you flexibility).

If you're going to get a Britrail pass, you're almost out of time. You have to buy it before you leave home. I don't know if they will send it to you after you arrive in the UK. I think they only deliver to addresses outside the UK.

The Two Together one would though. You are a bit late for real deals from Advance tickets though.

Shame you aren't all travelling together as you would have qualified for Groupsave, if travelling on GWR. Might still work to and from Bath, but you would need to avoid Cross Country.

Thanks for all the replies. I have bought a Family and friends railcard to use for discounts. My trip was last minute so could not have bought advance tickets anyway. Thanks everyone for their comments.

Advances are available until the evening before. Although close up you might find a super off-peak return better value, if the timings suit.
