Can anyone tell me if the Brit Rail Southwest Pass covers the journey from Gatwick to Victoria in London and back? I understand that this use constitutes a day's travel.
Thank you.

From the official webpage for that BritRail (not British, upper case B and R, no spaces) pass at http://www.britrail.com/britrail-passes/britrail-south-west-pass/
the boundary of coverage is:
Boundaries: Valid on First Great Western and South West Trains only
Services between Victoria and Gatwick are provided only by Southern Railways and Gatwick Express (a division of Southern). Services between Gatwick and The City via London Bridge Station, Blackfriars and City stations up to and beyond St Pancras International are provided by Thameslink.
The only First Great Western service at Gatwick is the service (takes 90 minutes, not every hour) to Reading.
The First Great Western terminus in London is Paddington.
No South West Trains trains serve Gatwick.
The South West Trains terminus in London is Waterloo.
If it is limited to those train companies you presumably can't use it on Crosscountry, which may be a bit restrictive over some of the routes when out in the south west. Nothing to do with your direct question, but something to bear in mind with your itinerary.
Our little map at http://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/britain-rail-passes#south-west shows that line as outside the coverage area of the pass.
