British Rail Sale?

Posted on Forum in January 2024. Does anyone know if there will be a sale this January, 2026?

“This sale is back for another year with 1 million discounted tickets of up to 50%.
It can be booked between 23 and 29 January – or whenever tickets sell out, for journeys between 30 January and 15 March, excluding already announced strike dates,
The fares, if available, will show up through all normal booking channels, and apply to selected routes and selected journeys only on those routes- so is very much a game of chance.”

It's been and gone, about a week or so ago. Last Monday was the last date of purchase.
In my case, having a railcard, ordinary fares worked out cheaper for the journeys I looked at/was interested in.
They didn't seem to sell out this year from what I saw.
For instance I had 4 x 40 mile journeys to book - £2 each in the sale, £1.55 each normal Advance Fares with a railcard. The same was true for 2 x 60 mile journeys I'm doing this Thursday- £3 each in the sale, £2.35 on normal railcard Advance fares.
I even looked at longer journeys like Cumbria to Derby or to North Wales, it was the same story.

I am not surprised they did not sell out. To get the deals you had to book specific trains in advance and the problem with that is you don't know what the weather will be like maybe weeks ahead. That means you have spent money on these special deal rail fares and possibly would have to drag out on some future date to make a trip when the weather might be terrible - or don't bother and lose your money. There is also the possibility of being ill - especially in winter.

You might get to a destination and wish to return early but can't because you have to hang around for your ‘booked’ train in order to get back home. It’s about time the railway started thinking more about passenger convenience.

I’m in the market for two Advance fares from Euston to Preston in mid March and could be flexible on times and even a bit on days but there was nothing. Of course I’ll be making the trip anyway so no gain for the train company to discount it.
