Just got the opportunity to go to the British Open for 3 days….July 18-20. Not much time to plan and I’m feeling flustered. We’d like to add a few days at front end or back end for a total of 7-10 days. We’ve been to London, but there are some places we haven’t seen so, perhaps fly into London and after 3 days, we could take a train to Liverpool? Or should be stop along the rail and see something? Make a circle? Any suggestions? Really flummoxed and time is ticking.
You could go one way direct on Avanti and the other way via Wales- that is Merseyrail to Chester, then Transport for Wales to Newport or Cardiff for Great Western to Paddington.
Or go across to York afterwards by direct train, then LNER back.to London.
But the first task will be to book a hotel in Liverpool, as those will be in short supply. Someone else on the forum said weeks ago that hotels on the Wirral, closer to Hoylake, are already booked solid.
Then build a to and from Liverpool itinerary.
For us rebellious colonials, calling it the british Open, makes clear what one is referring to.
You can be as rebellious as you want but it’s still The Open. Calling it something else will mark you out.
Is anyone actually going to be helpful to Debbie, rather than debating the name of the tournament? It's pretty clear, from the dates and the place what 'Open' tournament it is.
I am aware that Debbie is currently looking for accommodation. I had a quick look earlier and, yes, it's pretty fancy rates. I just produced something very quick and succinct while on the train home.
Hi Debbie,
We are attending The Open this year. Our plan is London and then Liverpool taking the Avanti train direct. I concur with the previous comment, make your hotel reservations in Liverpool ASAP as many options have been fully booked for months. We opted to stay near the train station as that seems to be the recommended way to get to Royal Liverpool. You can download The Open app for additional details on both transportation options and tournament information.
We opted for London as we enjoy it and the direct train makes an easy transition. The other option we consider was Wales or just spending more time near Liverpool.
You might want to consider flying into Manchester rather than London, given it’s just 30 miles away. There is a huge choice of places to see to tag on to a Liverpool visit. York, Chester, national parks like the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District, Etryi (Snowdonia) or Manchester itself.
Ideally you want to be staying centrally in Liverpool to make the travel out to Hoylake and back as easy as possible, but of course thousands will have already have thought of that and booked by now.
If you can’t find anything you can afford in the city look at options heading north along the railway line to Southport - nice places and not too far to commute by two rail lines. Birkdale, where Royal Birkdale is, another Open venue, for example.
