The British Museum is closed all day tomorrow. The reason has not been made public but is believed to be because of the State Visit of President Macron.
According to Le Monde, Macron will be at the British Museum on Wednesday, discussing culture. I wonder if that has anything to do with the rumored loan of the Bayeux Tapestry to the UK. I read that Macron is supposed to be making an official announcement about that during his visit.
Yes, spot on Mardee. The British Museum’s getting the Bayeux Tapestry on loan in I think 2027, and we’re letting the French borrow some Lewis chessmen and some of the Sutton Hoo treasures.
Oh my what a temporary trade! I’ve seen them all, numerous times. So glad that they will all still be accessible with a little Eurostar hop in between.

Oh, they'd better take care of those chessmen!! I've seen them in all their locations (Lews Castle, Scotland National Museum and the British Museum) and would hate for anything to happen to them!
I also read that this is the first time the tapestry has been back to the UK in over 900 years. Wow.
Thanks for this info- will be very cool to have the Bayeux tapestry here! Would make a great trip for a UK visitor to combine it with a visit to Battle Abbey. I've seen it in Bayeux but would definitely make another visit if it's confirmed it'll be at the British Museum.
Mardee - you just need to complete the Lewis chessmen set by going to see where they were found, on Uig beach in Lewis. A stunning beach, one of very many in the Outer Hebrides of course.
Twist my arm, John! I would LOVE to visit the beach in Uig and I'm kicking myself that I didn't when I was there. And if I would have known at the time the Lewis Chessmen were found there, I would have gone. But I left soon after my visit to Lews Castle where I was first introduced to those adorable little chessmen.
In fact, I would love to visit all the beaches and islands in the Outer Hebrides. I'm hoping to start in 2027.
