Traveling to London and then onto Italy on British Airways using carry on luggage. I'm worried that what we used last year when flying Delta will be slightly too big. We measured and we are just over 22x18x10 with wheels which is the BA carry on size requirement. I need 4 bags of this size for my family and don't want to break the bank. We loved the rolling duffle soft type. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!
Delta’s carryon max size is 22x14x9 so (if I read you post right) what you used last year is smaller than BA’s carryon size of 22x18x10. You don’t need to buy new carryon luggage if you carried it on Delta. Did you check luggage last year?
I pretty much always fly BA a number of times a year. I have never seen anyone's bag being measured and I've witnessed some big carryons being wheeled on with impunity. What frequently occurs is that when the flights are full or very busy, which they often are, then passengers are are asked for volunteers to check their luggage at the gate where it will be placed in the hold for no additional cost, those passengers are then allowed to board first (after disabled, young children and premium passengers). Of course this means that you'll have to wait at baggage claim on your arrival but in my opinion that's nothing too onerous but it also means that any baggage that you do take on board you'll have pretty much first dibs on the overhead bin above your seat rather than trying to squeeze it in somewhere far away from your seat.
Just last month I met some people who had flown BA from the US, then on to Spain. The bags they were allowed to bring into the cabin on the flight from the US to London were then NOT allowed when they tried to board the 2nd leg to Spain and they had to check them, and then they were lost (didn't get them till 2 or 3 days later). Regardless of anyone else's experience I would carefully measure any bags I'm thinking of bringing and make sure they are within the stated limits for that specific airline ( including wheels and handles). Also be careful of the weight and the size/weight of the personal item. It is always a crap shoot and of course different people have different tolerance for being denied to bring on their carry on. Lots of time people get away with much larger than the stated limits, but how will YOU feel if you are the one told it has to be checked. If not a big deal for you then you should gamble and try - it PROBABLY will be allowed on, and even if not it PROBABLY won't get lost. Depends on your tolerance for 'probably'.
