Hi, we are considering a 3-week trip to England & Scotland in April. Could anyone share pros and cons of visiting during this period? Thank you!
Pro- no worries about whether your hotel has air conditioning 😀
I will be making my 3rd March/April visit this spring. I find this time of year a pleasant time to travel to the UK and usually take advantage of airfare sales that are available for spring travel.
I usually travel to Europe in March/April. While it can be cooler and rainy, the crowds are fewer and the flowers are beginning to bloom.
Pros: Fewer crowds.
Many plants that cause allergies are not in bloom yet, such as rapeseed, the yellow flowers that grow in fields.
Cons: Could be cold, windy and rainy. On the other hand, it could be sunny, with blue skies, but chilly.
Waterproof rain jacket with a hood is a must to have with you; when needed, with a fleece layer under it.
Are your dates likely to coincide with Easter? The week before and after can be busy as it also links in with school holidays. May 1st is also a Bank Holliday and people can make a lon g weerkend if it (although that may be different for 2023 as the Coronation is the 8th May...)
Thanks for these replies! Our travel dates would coincide with Easter. Does anyone know much that's likely to impact sightseeing in terms of closures, etc?
Most shops will be closed but a lot of sights stay open. Many of them let you know that on their websites so it's not a bad idea to check ahead.
Easter shouldn't really affect sightseeing, although you may find some places shut on Easter Sunday. You may also find there is less (or even no) public transport running on Easter Sunday and the Monday may be a reduced service too. Places will be busier and you may need to book accommodation now, especially if planning on popular spots.
By law, all shops and supermarkets have to close on Easter Sunday in England and Wales. There is often lots of train engineering work on the rail network over the long weekend.
Schools take the first three weeks of April off, so places will be busy and more expensive at this time, although in 2023, people may opt to do something in early May for the coronation weekend instead.
There should be some colour in the gardens.
Best to start in the south.

Shops over 280m2 do, all others can open, like Sainsburys Local, Tesco Express and small independants also.
