Brexit and Pet Passports

For Nigel and anyone else living in U.K.

When we arrived with our dog Barley, we obtained an EU petpassport in the U.K.

Has anyone read or heard anything as to whether U.K. pet passports will no longer be valid for either travel within Mainland EU or for travel to/from U.K. just wondering if we need to get him an EU pet passport in Italy in the next couple of Months before the Brexit date.

Found a couple helpful links on U.K.gov website. But if someone has had any direct communication with their vets regarding this would be helpful.

It depends on if we agree “the deal” or not. Who knows what will happen?

If we leave in March with no deal, Brits will not be able to take their dogs into Europe without a lengthy and costly process taking four months. I would get a pet passport in Italy to be on the safe side. I don’t know what the position is going to be for Europeans wanting to bring a pet into the UK, but I presume it will not be as simple as it currently is!

There is some info on the gov.uk website her: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/taking-your-pet-abroad-if-theres-no-brexit-deal/taking-your-pet-abroad-if-theres-no-brexit-deal
That is the best info you can come by, and the answer is "possibly, don't know yet, depends if the Brexit deal is approved". Info anywhere else is pure speculation, a vet wouldn't know more.
If you (and Barley) are currently in Italy it would be sensible to get him an Italian pet passport, just in case.
This is classified as contingency planning for a hard Brexit, of which a lot is being done.

P.S. I enjoyed all your posts on Barley's trip.

Things may be a bit clearer by next Friday when 'Plan B' will have to be unveiled (assuming the withdrawal agreement is voted down). If I was to bet on any outcome at the moment it's that Article 50 will be extended/revoked rather than we end up exiting 29 March without a transition agreement. For now though I'd say wait at least a week and then see how the ground lies.

There are a couple statements from the U.K..gov site that are relevant, but still depends on what happens.
Dated Nov 6
“If there is no deal, pet passports issued in the U.K. would not be valid for travel to the EU “(says TO not within, so not clear for us)

“Return to U.K.
Your pet must have one of following documents:
1. Existing EU pet passport (both for U.K. and EU) citizens”
And
“There will be no change to current requirements for pets entering the U.K. from EU after March 29th”

But in a later document dated Dec19
“The documents required to enter EU would be the same as an unlisted or part 2 listed country”
In this case the passport would not work to get into the U.K. and would have other requirements.

So the big question is will Barley’s pet passport remain valid even though issued in U.K after Brexit? We will wait and see

When we take Barley to the vet for rabies shot in February, if we don’t have clear information, we may just get an Italian EU passport and also a test for a blood titre test to cover worst case scenario.
We’ll only be traveling to U.K. once we are heading back to US so more concerned about validity of UK EU pet passport, when we travel by train in Italy and Europe a pet passport is required.
