Boxing Day in the Cotswolds

We are going to be in England for the holidays this year and I'm considering driving (already have a car) through the northern end of the Cotswolds on our way up to Birmingham for a football match later on Boxing Day. I understand that much of England shuts down for Boxing Day. Are pubs and/or shops in towns like Chipping Campden open on Boxing Day? I really only need one good place to be open for lunch since we're probably just going to be walking around taking in the scenery for the most part, but it would be nice to have some options.

Shops in many small places such as the Cotswolds will be closed Boxing Day, whereas they will be open in Birmingham.

There will probably be some places open for lunch, but many will be closed, as they want to give their staff some time off. I suggest that you take some of the recommendations from Trip Advisor and Google their opening hours as they vary from year to year. Pubs are more likely to be open than cafes and restaurants, but many don’t serve food on Boxing Day.

Most families will have a big - read big - Christmas Dinner followed by watching the Queen King at 3 o'clock.

What hasn't made it into the tummies goes into the fridge (or if it is my cousin, the pantry/larder or worktop) overnight for another big lunch on Boxing Day. Hence little need for restaurants or food in pubs.

I don't recognise Nigel's scenario regarding meals over Christmas . Things have moved on
And I have never watched the Queen's speech ever and don't propose starting watching Charlie's

As Nigel stated, the majority of Brits eat a large Christmas dinner (typically served around 2:00 pm) and tend to overindulge on Christmas Day. Boxing Day is often spent consuming leftovers from the previous day, walks and hitting the sales. Pubs traditionally don't see much custom, certainly not for food, on Boxing Day however that's not to say that some couldn't be found just don't take it as a given.

It's worth noting that due to the high energy prices at the moment and anticipated to continue throughout the winter that some pubs/restaurants may consider not opening on Boxing Day in order to keep costs down.

You've never met my various relatives. And yes, the larder/pantry scenario with leftovers is genuine

Lots of families will also have a second Christmas Day on Boxing Day, to see the family they didn’t see on the actual day.
Least that’s what we and a lot of people I know do.

rogerbrown….

I’m bemused.

Since my first Christmas in London in the 80’s always watched the Queen’s speech.

For this California native have always appreciated England’s Holiday differences and traditions. From that speech, to the Pantos, to the Santa Runs, to the Peter Pan Cup Race, to the Christmas lights and to meandering about Liberty…

Its only the roundabouts that I don’t enjoy….then I seriously doubt you’d be fond of LA traffic.

Lastly in all my UK visits have never been to Stratford on the Avon. Have been to Stonehenge, Salisbury, York, Lyme Regis, Oxford, Stow on the World, Winchcombe, Windsor, Cambridge, Durham even Hartlepool.

Claudia
I thought you would be aware of the concept that "all men are created equal"
Never come across the Peter Pan Cup Race
Never been to LA but have cycled around Virginia and Oregon on different three week tours as well as Mexico twice amongst my 145 foreign holidays

Apologies OP

rogerbrown…

Peter Pan Cup Race is in Hyde Park Lido on Christmas Morning.

That quote in the Declaration of Independence is outdated.

“Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim.” The late, great – Nora Ephron

Pedro, regarding Campden-- the 3 delis that you may want to email with this same query would be:
-Maylams
-Fillet & Bone
-Tokes
All three are located on the main street and each of them are just excellent. Tokes has the best wine selection, F&B has the best fish and Maylam's is worth crossing an ocean for just for its own marmalade.
I am done. the end

What British people do on Boxing Day!

Go round to meet friends.

Go on a hike.

Finish the alcohol from Christmas-if you drink.

Sales if you like shopping.

Watch telly. Though the Monarch's speech is hit or miss. I know many a Scot who would rather have a root canal than watch, and I know some who watch the Queen just for tradition.

Might be a bit more viewers this year as it's a new monarch. If only Dominic West could stand in for Charles, I'd even watch it:)

-Maylams
-Fillet & Bone
-Tokes

I've just telephoned all three for you - all three will be closed on both Boxing Day and the next day (Christmas Bank Holiday).

Thanks so much Nigel, I really appreciate it. I had emailed those three (calls are expensive from the US!) but had only heard back from Fillet and Bone so far.

Sounds like we'll need to pack a picnic to take with us!
