Boxing Day and New Year's Eve in London

Hello,

Preparing for an upcoming holiday in London. Christmas day dinner has been figured out.

Are restaurants open on Boxing Day? Is it advisable to make reservations? Is public transport available as well?

Would you recommend making reservations for dinner on NYE? I am not sure how to spend NYE so recommendations are helpful. Large crowds aren't appealing.

Thank you,
Christina

As a generality they will be open but many will be doing special menus at special prices.

Thanks for the London clarification.

Restaurants will be open as they would be for a low trade Bank Holiday. Tube normally runs as do buses on a Sunday timetable. With Christmas and New Years on Sundays this year even more work is likely than before on the railways, and perhaps (likely) the Tube.

If you want a real restaurant on New Years Eve you should have been making reservations by now.

Then again, this might be the first Christmas/New Year holiday in 3 years because we had lockdown the previous two, and many places haven't survived, so the survivors may be crowded. As long as we don't have another lockdown. Who knows?

It’s good that you have Christmas Day booked.

If you don’t want crowds on NYE, then I would suggest self catering, as the places that are open are going to be heaving, noisy and Covid incubation factories.

Due to spiralling costs and staff shortages, it wouldn’t surprise me if more places took slightly longer holidays over Christmas and New Year. A local pub of mine have seen their fuel bills rise from £1,450 per month 15 months ago to £6,770 per month from September and they are struggling to survive. There maybe fewer dining options left by this time next year.
