Thinking of going to Tate Modern on a Saturday morning as soon as they open then heading to the Borough Market for lunch. From what I can tell lots of choices for food but I don’t see a lot of places to sit and eat. Are there tables, chairs or places where you can sit?
Thank you for any information or suggestions.
You can take what you buy to any park bench and enjoy!
Thanks Continental, from the few videos I’ve watched the food looks amazing but never noticed where people were eating what they bought. In a city where there seems to be a park every few blocks I don’t really see any in the Borough area, but as long as there are benches in the market we will be good.
I don’t remember benches- maybe because they were all taken when I was there or I was in the wrong spot. But there are standing tables (also busy) and raised curbs along the streets where a lot of people sit. This might not work if you have hip or knee issues but it’s a good option without having to walk too far. Also if you decide on dessert, I recommend checking out the Humble Crumble. Yum.
unless benches have been added recently there aren't any. If anything as it got busier and busier they would have likely taken them out - there just isn't room.
There are perches in the passage to Southwark Cathedral and a small quiet area next to the wall. The brick and mortar restaurants in the market have tables and chairs inside.
I haven't been back since covid so there could have been changes
Thanks KC and Nigel. I just watched a video and the vlogger did find a wooden grandstand type seating that I wonder if they are the perches you mentioned. In the same video they showed Humble Crumble, looked good, but so did about everything.
"Saturday......heading to the Borough Market for lunch."
Borough Market will be packed at lunchtime on Saturday. It's the most crowded time you could possibly choose to be at Borough Market.
Elbow to elbow, shoulder to shoulder. If you will have a traveling companion with you, be sure and hold hands as you push through the crowds, or you will be separated.
I say this from personal experience!
We had agreed on a meeting place in case we got separated.
Any places to sit, whether they are picnic tables, benches, etc. will be taken.
Best advice I can give is to collect all the food items for your meal, then head back to the riverfront to find a place to sit.
You might have to walk east along the Thames to find a place to sit, but there will be one eventually.
Closer to Tower Bridge on the waterfront, there are numerous large stone slabs about the height of an ottoman; perfect seats.
Was there last July. I didn’t see benches so we headed over to the small garden by Southwark Cathedral. A few benches can be found there.
Thanks Rebecca and Claudia. I was wondering what Saturday would be like, we might have to switch our Friday and Saturday plans. We will be there the end of September and was hoping maybe crowds wouldn't be a big issue. I did think about going to the river and finding a place to eat, depending on the weather and did see on google maps a semi-green area by the church that looked like there could be benches.
Jeff,
There is the wooden grandstand you mentioned, but that's it and people are sort of hawk eyed waiting for someone to leave.
I would absolutely, 100% recommend avoiding Saturday. We went then last April and it completely ruined our experience. I had seen the warnings, but wanted the "full" experience so went anyway and that was a mistake. Crowds don't bother us, but this was intense, like sardines. You couldn't appreciate all of what was on offer and we couldn't wait to get out of there.
Just something to consider.

This is why I appreciate this forum, thanks for all the responses. I too was thinking let’s get the full market experience, but now I’m definitely changing our plans to Friday. Hopefully that will be a little less intense.
KC Missouri or KC Kansas?
Borough is the most famous but I’ll say Maltby and Broadway markets are just as good or better.
You might also consider Seven Dials market or Mercado Mayfair.
