Bloomsbury vs Pimlico?

Which would be the better area to stay? I have hotels booked in both areas - one is a block from the Russell Square tube station. I only have 3 nights for my first stay in London in mid September and want to maximize my time. I prefer experiences vs tours, etc. However, being middle aged, who knows when I will be back? My tentative wish list includes: Westminster Abbey evensong, Queen Elizabeth’s Clothing Exhibition at the King’s Gallery hopefully timing it with viewing the soldiers heading or leaving to/from the Changing of the Guard, Churchill’s War Rooms, and a tour of the Royal Opera House. (Not much interest in the British Museum, Tower of London, etc.). I’ve also booked matinee tix for Paddington the Musical on my arrival day (kind of regretting that) and seats to Phantom on my last evening (I’ve seen it many times, but to see it in London …). Finally, I love exploring markets, bookstores, and I want to see Harrods and Liberty.

Would love opinions or other suggestions? Keep in mind I will be moving on to Paris for 3 nights, and then a week in the French Riviera so affordability is important.

Either area is fine but I personally would choose the one near Russell Square. I just find Bloomsbury to be a more interesting neighborhood to walk around plus one of my favorite restaurants (Honey & Co) is in the neighborhood.

An advantage of the Russell Square location is that you are only a 15 minute walk to St. Pancras Station if you're taking the Eurostar to Paris.

I agree with Laura. We were in Pimlico on our last trip, and while I liked it, I liked the vibe better in Bloomsbury. Seemed more alive if that makes sense.

What an exciting trip you have planned! Both areas are fine. Some of your activities are closer to Pimlico, some others closer to Bloomsbury, so that's a wash. Since you say that finances are important, which hotel is cheaper? Does one put you closer to convenient public transportation than the other? I have generally found more cheap food options in Pimlico, but not to say that Bloomsbury has none. So....you can't go wrong with either choice.

I have been exploring London a few days at a time, on layovers between the US and Asia. Last September I went to see "Totoro" on the first night and was a little apprehensive that I would fall asleep. However, the show was so good, I felt very energized and it helped me stay up till normal bedtime, so jetlag was the least disruptive of any trip I have had before or since. So hopefully "Paddington" on the first night will work for you too.

Have fun!

I would go for Bloomsbury, it's a more interesting area and a bit more central. For changing of the guard, note that the entrance to the King's Gallery is around the side of Buckingham Palace so allow yourself enough time to walk around to the front where the changing takes place.

If you like markets, the main one in central(ish) London is Notting Hill, but I'm not sure if you have time to fit that in. If you like bookshops I would try to visit the Daunt Books on Marylebone High Street. You can also visit Hatchards which is very close to Fortum and Mason.

"Paddington" was lovely! I must confess I dozed off a bit, but my husband not at all ;-)

.... which was the opposite of what both of us expected, haha.

We usually do save energetic shows for our first night (if we see anything that night) – The Play That Goes Wrong, Mamma Mia, etc. Good strategy. Shadowlands was great but we both would have dozed off on our first day!
