I liked the look of The California Hotel, a cut above most of the little B&Bs crowded into the streets such as Argyle Street, but scarcely any more expensive. I was booked there for a couple of nights in June to be close enough to St Pancras for an early start on the Eurostar. In the event my plans changed but I was impressed by the handling of my origianl booking and the cancellation. There is much helpful information on exploring the Bloomsbury area on their website. This site has useful information on both hotels and B&Bs. You may get better rates and availability by booking direct rather than trhough an aggrerator such as booking.com.

You could look at the Arosfa Hotel on Gower St and see if it meets your criteria. I have not stayed there but I stopped in to see it in March as research for a future trip. It seemed nice and it is very well rated on TripAdvisor. (Read the room tips to avoid the tiniest rooms) It's a small hotel and books up quickly.

I'm a fan of the B&Bs near Russell Square area. Particularly, The Thanet Hotel (8 Bedford Place), a sweet family run and very reasonably priced B&B for that area. I also like anything on Montague Street, please note, the price tends to increase here but they're lovely for a splurge. I haven't visited The Morgan (Bloomsbury St) in awhile but it's another oldie but a goodie. My fondness for this area is from when I went to school here. I know prices might be not be as low as in other areas, but the location can't be beat for convenience and for walking.

We stayed at the Ridgemount Hotel on Gower Street in Bloomsbury one year (basic but with a hearty breakfast and the staff all gathered outside to wave us farewell) and we discovered that RADA, the Royal Academy of .Dramatic Arts, was just down the street. Some ticketed student performances are open to the public and I have long regretted that we could not attend one. Anyone staying in the vicinity may want to check it out. Google the RADA website.
