Best way to travel from Whitby to Penrith by train in early July 2026

Whitby to Middlesbrough, there is then an hourly Middlesbrough to Carlisle train, change at Carlisle for Penrith.
So 3 trains in all.
The way to book it is Advance (Train Specific) fares Whitby to Newcastle, Newcastle to Carlisle, Carlisle to Penrith. It could be as low as a total of around £15, or £10 if you have a railcard.

The 0724 from Whitby is a through train to Newcastle, so on that one change at Newcastle as opposed to Middlesbrough. Until a few weeks ago that was a Whitby to Carlisle train.
