My family of four, 2 adults and 2 kids (ages 11 & 6) will be spending 5 days in London seeing sites. What is my best option for purchasing mass transit passes for unlimited on/off on subway, trams, & busses? We will be all over the city.
All the two adults need are a contactless card each or phone or watch pay - just tap in and out at the barriers on the tube or trains or just once on entry on a bus. The system will work out the cheapest daily cost for you - there are various daily caps depending on where you travel. It's unlikely but possible that you will come across trams.
The 6 year old will be free. Just make sure that at tube stations you use the wider gate on the side to get you and your child through together.
The best plan for the 11 year old is to get an Oyster card - cost £7 now but going up to £10 in September (7th?). Put some credit on it at the same time and then ask a member of staff to apply a Young Visitor Discount and s/he will pay half price for all journeys.
This is all for travel in and around London - any day trips further may well need tickets.
Johnnew52,
To make sure I understand you: my wife and I do not need to purchase any metro cards. We can simply use our credit cards or phones and the system will cap out the cost once we reach it? After we reach the daily cap the system will recognize our data and no longer charge us to ride. We would from that point ride at no cost until the next day. Im just making sure I understand correctly.
Yes, there are daily caps and weekly caps. The daily (24 hrs) runs from 4:30am to 4:29am
Just be sure to always tap in and out on the tube, otherwise you will be penalized.
And always use the same card or device during each 24 hr period.
