Right now I have a rental car booked for my entire trip, but I am curious if there is a better, faster alternative to traveling from The Cotswolds to the Lake District?
No not really. Having a car means you can explore the Lakes at your own pace.
A train would take 5 to 6 hours.
I suppose you could charter a helicopter if that's your style.

You beat me to it.
It will take a while grinding up through all the road works on the M6, but it would also be less than a hoot to do by train and then you would be car-less in the Lake District.
Drop the car at Cheltenham or, more choices at Birmingham Airport, then train from Birmingham International to Edinburgh (every hour at xx:53, change at Preston for Windermere, takes 3 and a half hours all in).
Probably 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.
If you drive just take it steady through the road works and be aware of the hidden cameras now in place on other parts of the M6.
oh yes- a helicopter would be nice.
