Best village/countryside day trip close to London?

We have one day to do the countryside around London. What is your best itinerary ideas for "quaint" villages? (I know you a Brits love the word quaint, haha!) I love the look of Wiltshire and Rye. Small villages and cozy houses or thatch cottages, cobblestone, English gardens. You know, your basic trite American dreaming ;).

Nearer to London, try West Haothly in Sussex, including a ride on the Bluebell train. I've posted about this before: try a search on 'West Hoathly'.

There are many quaint Villages. for Thatch - there are several places in the Cotswolds to see them.
I got a book a few years back on Amazon....

10 Best Day Trips from London
Loads of info about how to get to each place, how long it takes, what to see etc.
You can probably find this book at your library, or online.
Happy Travels....

Try Chilham near Canterbury. Chances are if you have seen an episode of something like Miss Marple, you've seen the village. Very pretty and there is a station not far away.

Look at the website for the London Walks Company. They do day trips outside London. You meet your guide (and possibly a small group) at a train station, then go out to your destination. Take a look at the various trips they offer.

I am going to London in Sept. and have booked a day trip with Becky's Secret Cottage tour that takes you to little known quaint villages in the Cotswolds. You can take the train from Paddington station for an hour's trip to the train station in Moreton-in-Marsh where Becky meets you and drives you around for 6 hours, stopping 3 times at her 400 year-old thatched cottage for tea, lunch and cream tea. Then she takes you back to the train station for your return to London's Paddington station. I have read so many lovely reviews about it that I just had to sign up.

Have a wonderful time whatever you choose to do for your "quaint" village day trip.
