Looking for transport ideas to get to Southampton. Bus? Train? Shuttle?
We are not backpackers but we also don't want to waste money. Looking for compromise and other travellers experiences.

Do the journey after 9am & you should get prices of £15 one way & the train will take about 1 hour 20 minutes. WAT = London Waterloo. The £15 Advance purchase ticket will tie you to a specific train. I am not sure whether that fare will be available if you just show up at Waterloo on the day - though these £15 fares are showing for buying today. I would purchase the tickets from any British Rail station when you arrive in London - even the day before. Just say you wish to make an ADVANCE PURCHASE SINGLE & give your favoured time of departure.

then train from Waterloo to Southampton
either buy an Advance ticket from southwest trains or megatrain, which has tickets on the same trains from £1 (that's not a typo).
then taxi from Southampton station to the boat
