Best priced meals near British Museum

Hi,

We are staying at Montague on the gardens in August so wondering about dinner near the hotel.. or happy to walk a bit and eat in another area. I hear soho and Covent gardens have tons of places too. Any suggestions for good food at moderate prices if possible? Just two adults and an almost 12 yr old boy with large appetite :)

Any favourite cuisine, pickiness? Also, what do you determine as moderate? One person's moderate is another one's expensive or cheap.

Thank you! Excellent questions :) For dinner if we could spend $20 pounds a person is that unreasonable? (What does a typical pub run for three- we may drink some beer/wine but not necessarily every meal) For cuisine my son loves seafood. Prob won’t eat curry but a place that has stuff for him and us works. Pubs are prob good for us but open to other ideas. He will eat pizza, pasta, shrimp and almost all seafood. We will eat almost anything not sure heavy beef/sausage eaters but I do want to try meat pie :)

Pubs are better for drinking than eating, apart from gastric pubs. Be aware that a 12 year old may not be allowed into some pubs.

Wagamamas is a good chain worth exploring. Hawksmoor is far more upmarket but has set price lunches that are good value. Belgo Centraal in Covent Garden is good for muscles.

Great thank you!! Which gastric pubs would you recommend? Also when people say some have a traditional Sunday dinner what does that include?

Also when people say some have a traditional Sunday dinner what does that include?

Usually referred to as a Sunday Roast; it is the traditional family Sunday dinner, served Lunch/Early Afternoon. The classic would be some roasted meat (Beef, Lamb, sometimes Chicken or Ham (Gammon)) Roasted Potatoes, a Vegetable, and Yorkshire Pudding and Gravy. So if you are around on a Sunday, it is worth a try. You can search for "Best Sunday Roasts" and get a range of places that serve it regularly.

Should be " gastro-" pub, not "gastric". People will give you strange looks if you ask about a gastric pub!
We find most of their menus a bit too edgy even for our educated palates.

For a moderately-priced, varied menu, we like Côte Brasserie. There is one in Covent Garden ( and others elsewhere). Their pre-theatre menu ( before 7 pm) offers 2 courses for £12.95 or 3 ( includes dessert) for £15.50, with 5 choices for each course. If nothing there appeals, order from the alacarte menu for more choices.

Thank you ! Gastro makes more sense lol!

This info is so helpful. I drowned myself in London touring and didn’t get to restaurants yet so this is excellent. We get breakfast included and get dinner one night at hotel so need five nights in London since one will be in Paris and I get the feeling for lunch so grab and go or if at market they have food stalls? Any low cost sit down places for lunch? Or a place that has grab and go but seats?

There’s a Pizza Express just south of the British Museum. They’re a good quality chain beloved of British families. If you’re there on a weekday, google “Pizza Express offers” and there’s almost always some kind of deal like 30% off food. Popular with kids. Always decent food.

Another vote for Tas, too. Turkish food - from simple grilled meat with rice to really tasty vegetable stews.

if at market they have food stalls?

Yes, there are a number of great markets, Borough Market is the best loved for food, lots of options. I would also recommend the Camden Lock markets with lots of food stalls, including a good array of ethnic cuisines. But all of the markets will have some food stalls.

A good shop for fish and chips would be nice, Poppies, Golden Union, Rock and Sole Plaice, Hook, and Kerbisher and Malt were all great.

The Cote Brassiere about (sorry I'm sure I've spelled it wrong) looks like a fabulous place for nice simple but filling meal. Thanx for the tips, enjoying this thread!

The BM itself is open for dinner on Friday night. Check out the museum webpage for menus, opening times etc.. admittedly not eaten there in years but always enjoyed the ambience provided by high quality replicas of items from the museum. Sounds like they have changed things around a bit with the main restaurant now in the stunning Great Court.......

There is a pub right across the street from the museum’s front gate that we ate at twice—standard but decent pub food. Both times, we ate there because it was convenient, but we wouldn’t have gone back that second time if we didn’t like it. Our hotel was a block away, and we did have dinner nearer the hotel one night, but I can’t even remember what cuisine it was, let alone the restaurant name, so I can’t give more details there—sorry!

The Museum Tavern, across the street from the BM, is a great place for a quick lunch. Standard pub food. Karl Marx used to eat there. So did I when I lived in London in the 70s. And, it's still there!
