Best of Bath!

Just back and bit jet-lagged, but very happy with Rick's recommendation of starting our trip directly from Heathrow to Bath, and especially his recommendation of the Marlborough House B&B! We had business in London at the tail-end of our trip so the idea of Bath first as a place to let down, recuperate from the over-the-pond-lack-of-sleep-in-coach-class worked out great. The Marlborough House B&B was topnotch. Our bedroom was a spacious Edwardian delight. Peter, the proprietor, went the extra mile plus in showing us all the myriad opportunities for tourism in the town and was extraordinary at all forms of customer service. His service started with his first email, insuring that we would find our way there by the best alternatives possible from Heathrow. Can't say enough good things about the place. We followed his suggestion for a private driver, and although his local contact was busy that day we did use her later on when we needed further transportation. The private driver from Heathrow - picking us up right at the exit from customs - to the door of the B&B was the same cost as the combined public transportation alternatives for two people!

We loved Bath. Lovely combination of relaxed Somerset County ambiance and just the right sized lively city. They have done a great job with the Roman Bath Museum! Felt like another visit to Pompeii ! We passed on the Therme Spa as the water temperature sounded most inadequate!

Another Bath highlight that worked out well was waiting to arrive in the Uk before we went to see the new James Bond movie Spectre. Never had reserved seats in a theatre before. Movie was great and seeing it in England was cool!

Thanks, Michael. What else would you recommend in Bath other than the Roman Bath Museum? We're going to be there for a very short time next spring and could use some tips.

The Spring will be a much better time of year to be there than what we experienced in November in terms of the weather. Rick says that it comes alive with flowers. Just strolling the downtown area among all of the shops is delightful. There is a true rabbit warren of old streets that have come alive with unique shops, cafes and just the stores and shops of everyday living. The Cathedral is really worth a nice slow exploration as well, full of history and quite grand. Absolutely lovely parks to stroll in, even in November. It's more of a relaxing place to stay as you venture out further. We did so easily traveling to Avebury, which was fascinating. (BTW - Stonehenge is closed in November). Enjoy!

Thanks! Our best times travelling are the hours spent walking around, poking down little side streets, wandering thorough parks, and popping into whatever church we run across. Sounds like a good fit.
