We will be traveling by car in southern England next spring, headquartered in Benenden, Kent. What maps would you recommend to use in conjunction with our GPS?
AA Large Scale Road Atlas available at supermarkets and many filling stations etc.
We have also used the large format AA road atlases on many trips to the UK, Ireland, and France. Try to get the one that is about 11 by 17 inches, staple bound. There is also a spiral bound format which is about 8 by 11. Spiral bound doesn't work as well - pages tend to come out and the bit of map you need to examine always seems to be right in the spiral-binding area.
Michelin maps are better for the planning stage, since they display a larger area.
We use a Borch map. It’s laminated and we got it at Barnes & Noble.
You can also do a lot of ‘exploring’ from home before you leave using Google maps & street view.https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Benenden/@51.0645129,0.5535752,11924m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x47df22de593e0ef3:0x21d91be0340e2ea8!8m2!3d51.066525!4d0.581756!5m1!1e1
There is a Southern England A-Z Regional Road Atlas for 5.95 available at https://www.az.co.uk When we went to Devon and Cornwall England we bought their Devon & Cornwall AZ road map and it was great. For another map go to https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk and look for their maps which are very detailed also. The third website that I would recommend is https://www.theaa.com for the AA Auto Association road maps. These offer great maps to plan your route.
