I have been looking since I am going to London the end of February. If you search, Time Out has a number of suggestions as well you will find many, many other suggestions. In the end, there may not be much difference (It is just fried fish and fries after all) between shops and if you find a favorite, it will likely be someplace you discover that has just that look and you hit at just the right time, rather than the actual quality of the food.

That said, since we will be in Hammersmith, I have noted to try Kerbisher and Malt on Shepards Bush, well rated, slightly different menu, looks interesting.

Closer to Notting Hill, I did see The Fish House of Notting Hill and Geales in Notting Hill mentioned. Though Geales is a bit more upscale than a chippy shop.

You want to visit Sea Shells of Lisson Grove, not that far from where you will be staying. Get on the tube at Notting Hill Gate (Circle Line, the yellow line on your tube map), traveling north-east on the line. Go three stops, get off at Edgeware Rd. Station. Look on the northeast side of the station, find Bell Road. Walk about eight blocks east on Bell Rd., you will come to Lisson Grove Road, turn left, walk one block north to Sea Shells of Lisson Grove, the best fish and chips shop in London, IMHO, at 49-51 Lisson Grove. Try the cod and chips, or the grilled halibut (great). Add mushy peas (yum).

Here's what I want to know. You want the "best fish and chips" in the area. If you got the second best, or even third best, would you be able to tell you had not had THE BEST? Have you ever had fish and chips before in England? Would just "really good fish and chips" be acceptable?

Norma's question is a bit what I was getting at. I think you could get perfectly acceptable and even great Fish and chips in any one of a hundred or more shops in greater London. There are a few places, well recommended, that might offer a few added items or have an atmosphere that make the experience somewhat special.

But to be honest, I am fully aware that the very best place might be that one that I stumbled upon, late on a rainy, cold night; slightly lost; after maybe a couple pints more than I should have had. Atmosphere and circumstance means everything.

Added Note: And in the cold light of the next day, a follow-up visit might leave you to wonder what was so great about the place.
