Best college residence to stay in for a mature traveller from North America in April

You're traveling during term time, so there is likely to be limited/no supply - my thoughts would have been LSE or UCL, but students will be in residence so neither has accomodation available. Many student accommodation contracts are full year, so they only open to outside guests in summer.

Private accomodation (known as PBSAs) may be different, but unlikely you'll find anything in colleges/halls of residence.

Take a look at the Hub by Premier Inn. I will be in Paddington in March, and this one came up in my search with reasonable rates for small rooms for one person:

I second Hub Premier (though I don't have experience with them yet). Years ago I studied abroad at UCL and wanted to stay close to campus during my upcoming trip, so I'll be staying at Hub Premier Goodge Street. The hotel got really great reviews and was very affordable compared to other options.
