I'll be in Birmingham this summer with my husband and we and want to take a canal boat ride. Unfortunately, Brindley's doesn't do tours on Tuesday or Wednesday, the days of the week when we will be there. Does anyone have any other recommendations for a company that does tours by narrow boat? Also, is it necessary to book in advance, or can we take our chances ?
Some suggestions....
This one runs daily trips from Sherborne Wharf
Or for a slightly different experience check out this one from Dudley
It seems that only Brindleys do regular tours from central Birmingham now. Sherborne Wharf used to do them but it appears not now. There is a trip on a heritage working boat as well, but that only runs Thursday to Sunday from late July.
An alternative is to get out to the Black Country Museum in Dudley. A fabulous place to visit in its own right, you can also take a narrowboat trip into the Dudley Tunnel. https://dudleycanaltrust.org.uk
edit:- wasleys beat me to it. Note the museum is some 10 miles west of Birmingham city centre.
Oops John. Well pointed out - I now realise the website for Sherborne Wharf was dated 2022....
The trip through the tunnel is great fun, especially when they show you how the boats had to be 'legged ' through it.
Would you be interested in a DIY day boat? Marys down at Warwick do a nice job. I wouldn't suggest a day boat in Birmingham or on the BCN - Birmingham Canal Navigations - between Birmingham and Wolverhampton.
