Before I book tours can I get feedback on my itinerary -week London

Hi,

Here is what I’ve loosely planned for the week. I’ll point out things I can't change but still a lot of room for flexibility and advice!

Sat arrive morning 10:30am. Have 3:45 Madame Tussaud booked (don’t judge my son is almost 12 we said no in NYC and he really wants to go)

Sunday: was planning to get a flexible pass for London eye so we could sleep in with jet lag from yesterday. Nothing else planned and this isn’t booked yet. I wanted to do a Thames River Cruise figured after London eye would be good convenient?

Monday: after breakfast at hotel changing of guards buckingham place. Thinking of doing 7:30pm jack ripper ripper vision night tour

Tuesday. First thing Tower of London. This is all I have planned in my head so far.

Wed all day/night Paris(already booked)

Thur: 4pm show Six. Only thing booked

Friday: booked-Harry Potter studio tour with luxury transportation (viator I think was your company)

Sat morning head to airport

I would like to also go to Churchill war room. Maybe Westminster abbey, borough market, Camden lock, British museum (across the street from our hotel) would love advice on where and when to fit these in. Please feel free to make recommendations if you think I’m missing must see things. My son does get bored easily so trying to keep kid friendly things in mind but he’s more like a teen than an 11yr old mentality wise.

Tuesday you could also visit Borough Market, it's nearby the Tower of London. Thursday might be good for the British Museum. It's huge and can be overwhelming, so choose an area or two that you and your son are interested in and focus on that. Don't worry about seeing everything on your list. Some times less is more. Have fun.

Thank you Susan! These are so helpful sometimes it’s hard to see the obvious because I’m too close to it but great point about Thursday. We can sleep in and go right across the street to the museum! I know my family will get tired and cranky if I try to make this trip like our disney world trips where I try to fit in every park and every ride and I don’t want it to feel that way. I want time to discover new things and time to go back to hotel and rest etc! :)

Yes, make sure you visit Westminster Abbey and the Churchill War Rooms. Buy tickets ahead online. You get inside Buckingham Palace for an audio tour in the summer. You go at your own pace which is good. Timed entry tickets. www.RCT.uk

Thanks Suki. Based on my loose schedule when do you think you would fit those in? I think we may book Churchill war room and use Westminster as a game day decision or just see the outside. I would like to go in again (went almost 29 years ago) but want to pace this trip well for our son too.

I'm concerned that you've planned your son's big-deal sight for your arrival day when you may be walking zombies. Actually, if you sit down anywhere before 3:45, you may be dead asleep within 3 minutes.

I have the same concern. (As far as day one going to Madame Tussaud) I may try to change it to next day. Thanks for for your input.

If you are going to consider a Jack the Ripper tour, you might look at the one thru London Walks. You don't have to book it, you just turn up. These were fairly grisly murders so perhaps someone who's done one recently can weigh in on whether it would be OK for an 11-year-old although you know your child best.

You may find you are waking up "too early" with jet lag! I'd suggest making sure you have some snacks in the room in case the kiddo wakes up starving and it's hours until breakfast!

You could also do the Thames River Cruise after you do the Tower of London. Take the boat from the Tower docks (right outside the entrance) upriver to Westminster pier. OR you can walk from the Tower of London to St Pauls via Leadenhall Market (used in the Harry Potter movies for Diagon Alley and the Leaky Cauldron.

You could put the British Museum in on the morning of your first full day while you are fresh then do the Eye later in the afternoon. I'd try to focus on a few galleries you've chosen ahead of time. This place is huge and can be overwhelming. I love the adorable little Lewis Chessmen but your son might be more interested in the Egyptian Mummies or the Rosetta Stone!

If I move the wax museum which I do think I should do what time would you book for Sunday? It’s cheaper from 1pm on and I figure time wise although we will want to assimilate to UK time will prob still feel five hours earlier for us? And then maybe we could do London eye that evening? Getting so confused :)

Thursday you could easily combine with the London Transport Museum (well liked by youngsters) and Covent Garden, either for food or just taking it it.

Covent Garden, essentially a collection of stores, should be good for some street busking in the open plaza. Kids are often involved in the show, voluntarily or not.
