Beefeater tour of Tower of London - Yes or no?

Is the Beefeater tour at the Tower of London worthwhile? Some say it's fun and informational, others say it's trite, with gruesome details. Does an entry ticket provide access to all areas, or is that only with the tour? Can't wait to see London! Thanks!

It’s definitely fun and informational and yes you have access to areas that are open to the public.

It’s great, even if the crowd is large. I think there were 75 people in our group but we still got a lot out if it.

We enjoyed the tour very much and definitely got more out of it than if we'd just wandered around on our own.

We thought it was informative and entertaining. I don't recall it taking us anywhere we couldn't have gone on our own.

It’s the only way you can get into the Church of St Peter ad Vincula where Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard and Lady Jane Grey are buried.

It isn't an option - has nothing to do with tickets - it is free, included in your admission. There are frequent tours, the signage is clear as you approach the moat. There is no requirement to join a tour, and there is no consequence if you do or don't.

Good stories though, telling the truth and debunking rumour, and a very much fun way to get an introduction to main areas of the Tower. The Yeoman Warders of the Tower (their proper name) are all ex-services and have a good idea of how to project their voice clearly. It is an excellent investment of a few minutes.

And, as said above, the only way (bar a service) of going into the Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula, which is, by itself, well worth the visit to the Tower. One of my favourite parts of the Tower.

After the tour (or even during it, nobody keeps you on the tour (but don't get up in the Chapel and wander out)) you are free to wander off all over the Tower.

It's free, and we loved it. My kids (13/16) especially. I would probably do it again bc it was very entertaining and interesting. I don't think it goes anywhere you can't see on your own but I am not positive.

Last year we were lucky enough to take a tour with the only female Beefeater. It was entertaining and educational. I would highly recommended doing a tour.

Thank you all for your help! I especially appreciate knowing this is the only way to see the burial place of Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard at St. Peter ad Vincula.

I think that they can be fun. They are often corny and are not necessarily politically correct, but that doesn't mean that you won't find them informative and fun.

I thought it was fun but our Beefeater had a dry, British wit which I loved. His comments about Henry VIII's codpieces were hilarious. I'd recommend seeing the Crown Jewels first if you get there early and then join a tour.

The tour script is known as "The Story" and to be accepted they need to be able to recite the 8500 words off by heart. How much deviation they are allowed if any afterwards I don't know.

I have taken the tour and they are wonderful. If you take the tour and don't care for it, you can leave the group and continue exploring the Tower of London, but I think you will fully enjoy it. It was very interesting and they do a great job telling you about what happened at the Tower.
