My husband and I are planning a trip in Northern England and found Rick's North England's Lake District and Durham special. It really made us quite excited to plan where Steve recommended to go. We did have one slight problem....when Steve got to Keswick, he said he stayed at a certain B&B and it was similar to some of the boutique hotels. No matter how many times we rewound it to listen, we could never understand the name of the B&B. We really appreciate Rick's expertise on all matters of travel and have his travel books floating all over the house. Could someone help us out and tell us the name of this B&B in Keswick. It sounded like Helk Hale but I have not been able to find it and maybe we just couldn't understand the pronunciation.
Howe Keld.
We stayed at Crow Park and Highfield, just a short distance from Howe Keld on the same street. Both very nice.
Yes, it’s Howe Keld. I stayed there a few years ago and loved the location right at the lake. Easy walk to town center, boat dock and theater (live theater in the summer).
The B and B has new owners and has been completely renovated, but the trip advisor reviews continue to be outstanding. And judging from their website, they have kept the amazing cooked breakfast that Rick loved.
I stayed at Howe Keld two months ago. I'm normally not a fan of B & B's but this place was fabulous. I was in room #1. It was amazing. Newly renovated and nicer than most hotel rooms I've stayed in.
The new owners are terrific. They used to own a restaurant in Switzerland. The husband was the chef and his breakfasts are amazing. You sign up the night before telling them what you want and what time to expect you.
There is even a tiny ice machine for us Americans near the entrance to the dining room.
The owners told me they are expecting a visit from Rick sometime this fall.
"There is even a tiny ice machine for us Americans near the entrance to the dining room."
Yes, you do love your ice don't you.:-)
Looks like the owners are also trying to sell. Any forum members with a dream and £1.35 million?
Howe Keld
We stayed at Parkfield House B&B a couple doors down from Rick’s recommendation, on the same block, since Rick’s was full. We fully enjoyed our stay there.
The Badgers Wood Guest House is as good as it gets. Anne and Andrew are great hosts. Anne is the great chef for breakfast, offering great options. Location is perfect on Stanger street, which should be called B&B row in the centre of Keswick. Parking is provided and if you need to do laundry, a launderette is not far away.
I always stay at the Herdwick House in Keswick on Leonard Street - lots of other B&Bs in this small neighborhood. They have a tiny, single room up in the rafters I tuck myself into. They have rooms for two and for families as well. It is a simple B&B - nothing fancy - but it's very clean and well maintained. I believe the owners have recently sold though and it's under new ownership. They were absolutely lovely people and I'm sure they turned it over to equally good owners. 5 minute walk to the town square.
