Has anyone booked a Bed and Breakfast in London ? I’ve searched but not finding anything unless it’s far out and a few Tube yransfers. I’d appreciate recommendations . It’s just myself for two nights in early June.
I had stayed at The Hub at Covent Garden which was great but now it’s over $600. Canadian funds for two nights.
Anything in central London in June is going to be expensive. $600 CAD for two nights is about 170 GBP per night. That is going to be tough to find.
I'm not sure of the exact nights but look at other Premiere Inn/Hubs throughout London. As an example, the Hub near Tower Bridge is lower and only about 10 minutes by tube to Covent Garden.
Another inexpensive budget chain is Travelodge.
Look at the Premier Inn chain. They are cheaper the further out you book and as June is a popular time to visit, unfortunately, with under 2 months to go, you are unlikely to find any bargains. The Tower Premier Inn may only be 10 minutes actually on the underground train, but allowing time to walk to the station, going underground, waiting for a train and getting out at Covent Garden, it is likely to be a 35-40 minute journey.
Weekends can be more expensive than weekdays and as many B & Bs only have a couple of rooms, they may be booked. I presume that you want to be centrally located with only two nights there, which suggests a hotel, not a B&B. Although I haven’t stayed there, athomeinnchelsea.com B&B gets good reviews and is in a good location.
Premier Inn prices are dynamic and rise during peak periods, which is why you’re seeing such expensive prices for the Hub.
What’s your budget? Best to start with booking.com or similar. Bloomsbury has some well-priced small hotels or you could look somewhere like Earls Court.
I have no idea what $600 Canadian dollars is - what’s your budget in pounds?
Hi Lorraine -
Travelodge are a good bet if on the lower end of the budget scale. There are plenty in Central London and they are clean and secure if a little spartan.
Be careful which ones you choose, location is important. For instance I wouldn’t risk the Central Aldgate East one which we have stayed at, because it is right next to the railway tracks and could lead to a disrupted nights sleep. The one south of the river at Southwark is good, we’ve stayed there, and we’ve also stayed at Vauxhall a couple times. I wouldn’t recommend Vauxhall as there are better locations (Vauxhall worked best for us as we were attending events nearby, hence the choice), better suited to Central London. The problem is the more ‘central’ you get, the pricier they are.
As I’ve mentioned before, skip the Travelodge breakfast and go room only and pick up breakfast once you are out and about. More choice, better value.
Also, check out booking.com where you can specify price range and location - you should get plenty to choose from there and you might get a decent deal at a swisher hotel.
Have a great trip.
Ian
The Covent Garden location of hub tends to be one of their priciest -- other locations might be cheaper.
"Point A" is a new chain similar to hub that someone mentioned recently, so you might check them out.
Also, in Bayswater, the London House Hotel typically has some small single rooms at 100-110 GBP per night and is a 10-min walk from the Bayswater and Queensway tube stations.
Lastly I see frequent recommendation of the Jesmond Dene Hotel on this forum though I've never stayed there.
I think you are going to have to accept that you will be paying more than expected. The best prices with Premier inns are often found about 6 months out . I stayed at London Waterloo for 6 nights earlier this month for £550 and felt I had good value. I did book far in advance and went in April.
Lorraine, have a look at the family-run Ridgemount Hotel on Gower Street, walking distance to the British Museum and Sir John Soanes museum, and close to transportation. Looks like rates would please you.
I second the Hotel Ridgemount on Gower Street. There are several other similar nice, small hotels on that street which is close to a tube station and many walkable sites.
It’s JUNE of course prices are going to be high. Summer. Tourists.
Look at the Premiere Inn or Travel Lodge in Ealing. Using the Oyster card the train to Paddington from Ealing Broadway is a 7 minute ride. Can then use the tube at Paddington or from Lancaster Gate which is a 10 minute stroll.
You can use the Tube from Ealing Broadway as well just a longer ride.
Ealing is a great suburb. Stayed there with friends in January.
Pho Saigon, Ginger and Moore, Bill’s Restaurant, all have good food.
Thanks for all of your great detailed responses. I did use booking.com as some suggested and found a great deal at a hotel rated Fabulous and 4 star, The Vincent House London Residence , full price for two nights-$367. ( 217 pounds).
I did check the other Hub locations and the newer Point A but all were quite a bit more than this and it is quite central with very good Tube connections.
Great news. Enjoy your stay!
Try Rick Steves recommended Cherry Court Hotel in Victoria.
Take a look at the Jesmond Dene - I always stay there.
Small hotel, breakfast optional - no elevator
2 or 3 blocks from Kings Cross Station
I've checked out Jesmond Dene, it's a nice small hotel. I stay at a B&B down the block on Argyle, closer to Kings Cross.
I call up the place to make my reservation. Numerous B&Bs are located on Argyle Street and Argyle Square
