I'm planning a trip to Ireland next year and would also like to visit Liverpool and take in some of the major Beatles sites. Can this be done on a day trip from Dublin? Would 2 days be better? Hoping to avoid exchanging currency too often. I'm talking to folks on the Ireland forum about all the immigration ins and outs. Thanks!
Two days would be better. Liverpool is an amazing city with lots to see.
Theoretically it could be done as a day trip - RyanAir has multiple flights between the two cities, including one to Liverpool around 7am and late flights back - but Liverpool deserves more. As well as the Beatles sights (which are many) there’s a superb maritime museum, two stunning 20th century cathedrals and great restaurants and bars.
Have you got a contactless/tap-to-pay bank card? If so then currency won’t be an issue. The UK isn’t quite cash-free yet but I think I’ve only used cash twice in the last couple of years to pay for stuff here in England so you shouldn’t need to worry about getting any currency out to spend in Liverpool.
Many thanks for your reply! Our Liverpool excursion will likely be tacked on at the end of a 2 week trip to Ireland. I'm hoping to do another trip later on to the UK. Having never been to either Ireland or UK before, it's hard to decide what to see this first trip, but Ireland will be our focus. Being a huge Beatles fan, how can I not spend at least 1 day in Liverpool! But maybe 2 days would feel less rushed. Good tips! Thanks!
I just returned from Liverpool and did the eight hour Beatles' tour with Fab Four Taxi. The tour included a visit to the Casbah Club, which was a wonderful highlight.
Also, the best meal I had on my trip was the tasting menu at Panoramic 34 in Liverpool. If you can, make a reservation there!

Cool info! Thank you!
I agree you should give yourself 2 days. By the time you get through the airport coming and going, you'd have a very limited day if you tried to do it without staying overnight in Liverpool.
In one day, we visited the Beatles Story museum at the Albert Dock, conveniently located by the tourist info office and the pickup point for the Magical Mystery Tour bus, which we also took. Luckily we got inside just before a large bus full of other tourists arrived, otherwise we would have been waiting 20-30 minutes just for entry. The MMT bus ticket gets you free entry to the rebuilt Cavern Club, right near where they drop you at the end. Around the corner is the Hard Day's Night Hotel, which you must see, IMO. We enjoyed a late lunch from their "Any Time At All" menu.
We didn't have the opportunity to book the tours inside the homes. People do rave about those.
Liverpool has other things to see as well. There's LIPA, whose lead patron is Sir Paul McCartney https://lipa.ac.uk/
Apart from Beatles, there's the cathedral and the World Museum.
Yours is the 2nd recommendation of Hard Days Night Hotel so that is definitely going on the list! Yes, based on these responses, I think we'll plan on overnight in Liverpool then back to Dublin next day. Really appreciate the help I've received on RS forum!
I have just planned a trip to Liverpool as part of a larger trip in the UK. Yes, if you're a Beatles fan and want to see "all" the sights, museums, etc, it will definitely take two days. Two very packed days! Three days would give you more leisure time, because a lot of the indoor sights close by 5 pm every day. Note also that some of the sights might require advance reservations, so plan carefully!
Thank you! I'm still in the very early planning stages, but this is all wonderful information!
I’m a huge Beatles fan and have just returned from my 8th trip to Liverpool. Definitely two days at minimum.
I'm one who tends to go against the grain when it comes to Liverpool. I find the city to be quite run down and of very little of interest outside The Beatles (which have become ridiculously obsessed over in Liverpool). I really enjoyed The Beatles museum at the Albert Docks, it's very well done and is perfect for Beatles fans, I got so caught up in the moment that I willingly parted with £50 for a Past Masters vinyl (it's £25 on Amazon!). I haven't done the Magical Mystery Tour bus or the National Trust childhood homes of Paul and John as I couldn't persuade the family to indulge in any more Beatles stuff, however, if you're not encumbered by reluctant fellow travellers then I would recommend two days to maximise your opportunity to fit everything in.
I'm sure Liverpool is a lovely town, but to be perfectly honest, we're only interested in The Beatles sites. Our paternal grandmother was born in Burnley, lived in Wigan, so we might try to find her old house if we can. It doesn't look too far from Liverpool. Albert Docks Beatles museum sounds good. I appreciate all the tips!
