Hi, we are planning our trip in April and will be staying in Bath for a few days. Would love to take a tour to see Stonehenge.
Rick Steves lists a couple of vendors in his book, namely Mad Max Tours and Lion. Was looking for recommendations and personal experience with local providers. Also feedback on tours themselves.
Is it worth to do a full day tour of Cotswold Villages or Stonehenge by itself?
Thanks!
I took the Mad Max tour from Bath that included Stonehenge & Lacock and Castle Coombe & Avebury just a couple years ago, It was fantastic. I was satisfied with the time spent at each location and felt the day went by so quickly. I prefer Avebury to Stonehenge because you can actually walk around and touch the stones.
The Mad Max tours mentions places I enjoyed visiting. If you just want to visit Stonehenge, you can take the train from Bath with a Day Return Ticket to Salisbury. You can buy a ticket for a bus and a timed entry to Stonehenge from there. You can not walk thru the Stones without being part of special events. You can walk thru Avebury. Be sure to visit Salisbury Cathedral. Lacock is a National Trust Village that was featured in the Harry Potter Films. It always has a early Photography Museum featuring Fox Talbot. Since you are not driving yourself, I would just take a tour, because every stop will be timed and prepaid. Bon Voyage!
In 2024, I took the train from Bristol (it stops in Bath) to Salisbury. Then took a tour with The Stonehenge Tour (https://www.thestonehengetour.info/). It was a narrated bus tour that included Stonehenge, Old Sarum, and the Salisbury Cathedral with the Magna Carta. The bus runs like a HOHO bus so you can take as much time as you like at each place. At the end of the day I took the train back to Bath. And, if you haven't yet been to Salisbury, it is worth taking some time to walk around. Super cute town!
Enjoy your visit!
I've done several Mad Max tours including Stonehenge and Avebury as well as some that were just Cotswold focused. I think they are a great option.
I've also stayed in Salisbury several times and have taken The Stonehenge Tour shuttle run by the local bus company the Salisbury Reds. It does not go to Avebury but as mentioned above, goes to Old Sarum and you get an entry to Salisbury Cathedral as well.
To me, if you are in Bath, the Mad Max tour is the easiest most efficient way to go.
I have not taken any tours with Lion but I'd not hesitate to go with them either. I believe Maddy, the owner of MadMax was married to the guy who, after their divorce, started Lion Tours. Both are longstanding reliable tour companies.
I did the same tour Laurie Beth did and enjoyed it very much.
Thanks everyone for sharing! Super helpful
We took a half-day minibus tour just to Stonehenge with Scarper Tours in December. At the time, the Mad Max Tours were not running and we did not walk to do a full-day tour to the Cotswolds. We were picked up in the afternoon in Bath by Dan in a small mini-van. Since it was December and the Bath Christmas Market was is full swing, there were only 3 of us on the tour. We loved the fact that when we got to Stonehenge, we had a few hours to explore on our own. There were maybe a hundred people total at the site, the rain had let up and we had the best weather for pictures, including a rainbow. Dan was knowledgeable, friendly, and it was a very easy way to see Stonehenge from Bath.
