Bath to Stonehenge

Hello,
We are staying in Bath only one night. We will be coming from Torquay by an early train. We would like to visit Stonehenge that afternoon. Other than a tour which most leave early in the day how do we easily get there? I have looked a bit into car rental but not sure.

From the Viator tour website description of "How To Get There" about Stonehenge, but you should do more of your own investigation:

"Public transportation
Trains and public buses run from London, Bristol/Bath, and Southampton to Salisbury train station. An hourly tour bus runs between the station and the Stonehenge visitor center."

It depends what time you are arriving, as to whether you can get there by service bus.

You can leave Bath bus station (adjacent to the railway station) at 1145 on bus 272, arrive Devizes at 1249, leave Devizes at 1305 on bus X2, arrive Stonehenge Visitors Centre at 1354, leave at 1640 arrive Devizes 1727, leave Devizes at 1732 on bus 273 arrive Bath 1842.
£3 per bus, total cost £12

Otherwise you have to continue on the train to Salisbury (probably easiest by changing onto a London Waterloo bound train at Exeter) then take the tourist bus, but then you would have to do something with your luggage while in Salisbury.

There is also an X2 service bus from Salisbury at 1350, arrive Stonehenge Visitors Centre at 1413, then continue to Bath as above at 1640. That is another £3 bus.
