Need to go from Bath to Edinburgh next May. While doing a great deal of initial research on trains vs. planes, it appears, as a general rule, that one can fly from London to Edinburgh much cheaper that going by train using any routing. Is this really the norm, or am I looking in all the wrong places? Also, about how far ahead are train schedules and prices available? Any insights will be appreciated. TC
If you rent a car the "Freeway" or A roads are pretty easy and quick to drive. That said it is probably easier to go to London from Bath if you are taking a train or plane; as there are many more direct connections to Edinburgh from there.
You might post this in the transportation section as there are some rail experts who respond there. I've usually used Scotrail because I am usually traveling in Scotland. When I enter Bath and search on tickets, the cheapest is £127. If you decide to fly, make sure that you factor in your costs to get to the airport. You'll have a ticket from Bath to London by train or bus or a combo.

The cheapest rail fare between Bath and Edinburgh is £29.50 via Virgin West Coast. Would become available about 12 weeks prior to travel. You aren't clear if you are travelling alone or with others which may be significant on the cheapest fare.
There is a direct bus from Bath to Bristol Airport now as mentioned by Keith - no need any more to go via Bristol which may be suggested by older posts on this site..
I agree with Keith , Fly with Easyjet from Bristol, cheaper and quicker than train.
If the choice is train or plane, then I agree with both Unclegus and Keith. The train between the south west of England and Scotland can be a grind, even on direct routes. The best choice is EasyJet from Bristol airport.
Many thanks for all the information. Am still doing research and now the process is much easier due to the advice that appears in the forum. It is appreciated. TC
I have a English friend who always uses Bristol as entry Airport from the US. She says its so much easier than any London Airport.
kathleen - no trans- Atlantic flights go into Bristol. A few years ago, Continental had a daily service from Newark (New York) to Bristol but that got dropped - probably because of lack of support from the Americans who only seem to think of London as the gateway airport for the UK. Direct trans-Atlantic flights do go from Scotland as well as Birmingham & Manchester. Cardiff is trying to get direct trans-Atlantic flights. Like Bristol, Cardiff has flights to Dublin that link with trans-Atlantic services.
Thanks to all for the helpful information. Now we just have to do some fine tuning.
