Bath or Oxford with Tweens?

Hey All. Okay -- unfair question but I'll ask anyway. We've just booked plane tickets for a short trip to London + maybe one other place in mid-March 2025. Just 7 nights total in the UK. Our main goals in London are to see a few museums (not all), walk around, eat good food and -- our main goal -- see lots of theatre (my kids are theatre addicts).

I'm considering adding maybe two nights/one day at either Oxford or Bath. Things to consider: I studied at Oxford so I'd like to bring the fam there and show them around. But I've never been to Bath. Also consider: we went to Italy this past summer; would Bath kinda be a repeat of some of the bath towns we saw in Tuscany? (no offense meant to Bath, England, with this question). My twin tween girls were interested in Oxford because of the potential "college clothes shopping." But then, a friend who's from the UK just told me Bath is "spectacular."

Ach! The choices! Thanks for your thoughts.

Another vote for Oxford with its many colleges and the Bear Inn.
Bath has the Roman baths and Georgian architecture.
British clothing prices will shock you. Not a place to shop for clothes.

I really love both, but with kids that age, and given your connection, definitely Oxford.

I don’t know which is better but I will say Bath is nothing like an Italian town so don’t worry about that. It’s very English.

Good shops for tweens (I have one) are H&M, Zara, New Look and Primark which is super cheap.

We love the theatre too. Six is a massive hit with this age group.

Have your kids read much Jane Austen? If so, I’d vote for Bath. If not, probably Oxford.

I agree SIX is a great show. They will love the costumes and the music and maybe learn a little history. Both Bath and Oxford are favorites of mine. However, my trip to Oxford was between terms and I got to stay at Christ Church college which was tons of fun. So, maybe Oxford is now my favorite by a smidgeon. They are both great walking around towns.

Oxford, we found Bath a bit too touristy.
Six, we attended a sing a long performance and much of the audience was in costume. Have your kids check it out.
If, and only if, your family is in love with all things Potter; we highly recommend visiting the Harry Potter studio.

We found purchasing tickets day of performances at the theater box office was of great value and also provided a better selection of seats than offered on line.

Oxford is probably the better choice. And due to the excellent bus service between Heathrow and Oxford, if you put it at the very beginning or very end of your trip, you can cut down on time taken up by travel.

IMO THIS is the reason to take them there. They need to see and hear about your memories and learn how adults connect with places a part of their personal history.

I was going to say Bath as I couldn't imagine Tweens being interested in a lot of boring old college buildings.

We absolutely loved Bath, a lot more than Oxford, but we are a retired couple.

For tweens, I would definitely recommend Oxford. They would love the energy and the University environment.
We also saw a play in Oxford, at a charming smaller theater. They have a lot of reasonable good restaurants, again with a young clientele. Since you went to Oxford, I think that would be fun to share that with them. Enjoy

to let the tweens have a great time, going where WrenG went to school, and seeing all the young people at the University, and - in my humble opinion - discovering the magic that is Moo-Moo's in the Covered Market - they will have fun.

Probably in Bath they could too, but it isn't the same. Hope they are inspired by Regency Crescents.

I enjoyed Bath but LOVED Oxford! I think it would definitely be a hit with your Tweens. It's just a fun city with lots to do, students all over and a very cool vibe.
