Hello,
I am traveling to the UK. I fly into London and will be there for 2 days before taking a train to Edinburgh to join a tour of Scotland. I have been to London before, but did not visit Bath, Cotswolds or Stonehenge. I am interested in all three, but not sure I can fit them all in in 2 days. Any suggestions? Is there a train from Cotswolds to Edinburgh?
thanks so much,
Margie
Look at a map.
You definitely can not fit them in 2 days.
Where are you going in the Cotswolds?
You can train to Bath from London. 1.5 ride from Paddington Station.
You can train from London to Salisbury and take a tour to Stonehenge. Train from Waterloo then a bus to the standing stones. 1/2,day trip.
Use Google Maps. Research and decide your destinations given your time limits.
When you say you are in London for 2 days, is one of those days your arrival day, or do you mean your arrival day and then two full days, before leaving to Edinburgh on Day 4.
If the former I would suggest taking the coach straight from LHR to Bath on arrival day (that avoids going into London, then back out again as you have to on the train, when you are jetlagged).
Then on Day 2 you can do a day trip by train direct from Bath to Salisbury for bus to Stonehenge, which will give time later in the day in Bath (as well as part of Day 1). Bath is closer to Salisbury than London.
Then on Day 3- train to London Paddington, tube to Kings Cross, train to Edinburgh.
The answer to your last question is there is no direct train from Moreton in Marsh (the usual station for the Cotswolds)- it is several changes of train, or (probably the most sensible route is back to Paddington, for Kings Cross etc)
Thanks so much for this information. I arrive at 10:10 PM. on April 19. I have to be in Edinburgh by 3:00 on April 22. I am wondering if the train runs that late at night and if it is safe at that time.
I have done a little more research, based on what you told me. I looked into Mad Max Tours and they leave from Bath. I am thinking to stay in London the first night since I will be getting in so late, then on the 20th take a train to Bath and plan to stay the night in Bath. Take the tour on the 21st and train back to London on the 21st and stay in a hotel near Paddington Station for the morning departure to Edinburgh. Does this plan make sense?
My choice for that journey would be to stay at the airport, take a direct coach the next day from there to Bath, stay 2 nights then fly to Edinburgh from Bristol Airport. Still a bit hectic but I wouldn't keep going to London.
That sounds fine to me.
I don't know what other people think about arriving at Heathrow that late, but last trains and tubes leave around midnight. (0013 last Elizabeth Line arr Paddington 0036 Elizabeth Line, or 0003 HEX or 2331 tube). That could be tight for getting through the airport in time.
So you either face a taxi fare, or the night bus N9 to Trafalgar Square- not a bright idea if you are all tired. Personally I would just book an airport hotel for the night, then you can just drop, and start from the airport next morning on the coach at around 0800.
By the way there are up to 5 Easyjet flights a day Bristol to Edinburgh for as low as £23 + luggage fees + £16.50 for the airport bus direct from Bath.
If you do decide to go back into London for the train to Edinburgh, don't stay at Paddington. The Edinburgh trains go from Kings Cross so it would be better to stay near there and there is plenty of choice of accommodation.
On 20 June the first coach leaves Heathrow at 0820 and arrives Bath at 1040. The current price is a princely £1.
On 22 June the 1545 flight from Bristol arrives Edinburgh at 1700. The base fare is currently £40.99 or £71.98 including luggage and seat selection. The earlier flight at 1100 is twice as much base fare, and the later flights at 1915 and 2045 are rather late.
I love these ideas! Also flying from Bristol sounds perfect. Thank you so much! I will stay at a hotel near Heathrow on the first night then train to Bath the next day. It looks like the flight from Bristol is early 7:00 AM, so will stay a night in Bath, then a night in Bristol. I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a hotel in Bristol that would be close to the airport for the early morning flight departure.
Thanks again.
I am visiting in April and fly to Bristol on April 22.
Sorry, that should be: flying from Bristol to Edinburgh on April 22.
I went to on the National Rail Enquiries website to look at the train schedule. Is there one particular terminal I should leave from? It looks like Terminals 2 & 3 train is cheapest at 27.60. The website says that there are two changes on the route. Does that mean I have to get off of the train and get on a different one? I apologize in advance! My questions seem dumb, even to me! It also says valid for this service only-does that mean that I must catch that specific train at that time, or could I take an earlier/later train using the same ticket? I guess I am trying to decide if I should purchase now as opposed to later.

You want National Express for the coach to Bath. It goes direct and is easier than the train.
The only hotel at Bristol Airport is the Hampton by Hilton- 250 metres from the terminal. They are quoting £153.47 for that night.
But that is better than catching the airport bus from Bath at 0400.
Yes only the 1 flight that day.
Sorry I got the month wrong.
The best fare I am seeing is £32.60 but whichever way yes it is an advance fare valid only on the train you book. If one of the first two trains is late you can catch the next Reading to Bath train without penalty.
Yes you get off the Elizabeth line train at Hayes and Harlington (the first station after the airport), change platforms then join a train to Reading. Get off at Reading and join your Bath train there.
There are 3 stations at Heathrow- Terminal 5, Terminal 4 and Terminals 2/3.
Elizabeth line trains run from all 3 stations.
Which station you join at will depend at which terminal your previous night's hotel was.
I recommend staying in a hotel at the terminal you arrive at. Do you know which that is- your flight ticket should tell you. If not your flight number can be looked up.
The sooner you purchase your train ticket the better as it will only go up in price, maybe sell out.
By the way on that date the 0820 coach is £10, which is a flexible fare- https://book.nationalexpress.com/coach/#/choose-journey?journeyType=single&departureStopId=57286&destinationStopId=87025&departureDate=20%2F04%2F2023&departArrive=DepartAfter&outboundTime=00:00&returnDate=20%2F04%2F2023&departArriveReturn=DepartAfter&returnTime=00:00&adults=1&children=0&infants=0&euroAdults=0&euroChildren=0&euroSixtyPlus=0&euroInfants=0&ouiAdults=1&ouiChildren=0&usingCoachCard=false&youngPersonCards=0&seniorCards=0&disabledCards=0&partnerId=NX&campaignId=DEFAULT&request_locale=en&numResults=4
Thanks so much for this information. by luck, the hotel I booked is closest to the terminal I arrive in.
Thanks for the links I was able to find the coach schedule that was direct to Bath using the link, and it looks like it is just a little over 2 hours by coach if I purchase the direct coach. I really appreciate the assistance!
I've done a Mad Max tour from Bath and recommend that as the easiest way to see several places.
I also recommend the Mad Max tours. Last September I took one that covered Stonehenge, Avebury and two Cotswolds villages that weren’t too far away. There is another tour to the Cotswolds that goes to villages you’ve probably heard of, but I quite enjoyed them. I had been to the Cotswolds on a previous trip and was looking for new places to see.
