base towns in Cotswolds

Looked into walking trips in the Cotswolds (north) and doesn't seem as though there's adequate time to visit manors, castles, gardens as well as walking 6 - 8 miles / day.

Exploring idea of staying in 3-4 towns (Moreton-in-Marsh, Stow-on-the-Wold, Broadway and Winchcombe) for 2-3 days and use them as bases.

Hope is to walk 3 - 5 miles, spend time exploring the sites in the area, then take public transit (buses 21/22/801/606) to return to base. Anyone have experience with these bus lines?

thank you.

Are you planning on walking the Cotswold Way National Trail or just some circular walks? That would help to know when suggesting a home base.

Robin,
Plan is to walk from "base" towns to visit gardens, manors, castles and other towns. For example, one walk would be from Stow-on-the-Wold to the Slaughters and then on to Bourton-on-the-Water to visit Bourton House (Manor?). Probably take bus to return to Stow-on-Wold.

thank you for responding.

Stow-on-the-Wold would be a great base to walk to the Slaughters and Bourton-on-the-Water. While in Bourton-on-the-Water you should see the Model Village which is behind The Old New Inn, it’s worth a visit. Broadway would be a good base to walk to Stanton. From Winchcombe you could walk to Cleve Hill it’s a steep climb but the views are beautiful, then onto Sudeley Castle. I walked the Cotswold Way in 2014 at the age of 65, I couldn’t believe the views from Cleve Hill.

Thank you to both Robin and James.

Robin, thanks for suggestion for Cleve Hill; it wasn't on my radar, but will add it!
James, link you provided looks very helpful with bus routes and schedules. Did you travel the Cotswolds via bus?

Be careful if planning on getting to Bourton House Garden from Bourton-on-the-Water by foot...

Bourton-on-the-Water and Bourton-on-the-Hill are two villages with similar names that are nowhere near each other.

Bourton-on-the-Water is south of Stow on the Wold (where the Wind Blows Cold as I learned to say as a nipper). To get to Bourton House which is in Bourton-on-the-Hill, you need to go through Stow on the Wold, all the way down into the valley to Moreton-in-Marsh, turn left and go until you go up the hill to Bourton-on-the-Water.

That's between 9 and 10 miles depending on your route - 20 minutes by car and about 3 and a bit hours on foot.

By the way, 3 "e"s in Cleeve. It is the bit of country where I was a kid.

Whilst in that corner of the Cotswolds, if gardens are what you like, you may visit Hidcote which is an exceptional garden built of rooms, and Painswick which is altogether different.

Hi dv- > NO, I travelled to the Cotswolds by car as I live an hour away. (That’s why I and a few other fellow Brit’s who appear on here can give such detailed answers).

Nigel,

VERY grateful for the clarification about Bourton-on-the-Water versus Bourton-on-the-Hill vis-a-vis Bourton House.
I am planning to begin our travels from Moreton-in-the-Marsh but did not allocate time while in Moreton-in-the-Marsh
to visit Bourton House - appears that Bourton House is a 2 mile walk from Moreton.... Will re-arrange itinerary.

Welcome any other suggestions...
David
