We are planning to take a train to Canterbury on Sunday August 24th in time for Evensong at the Cathedral. Then it looks like Monday the 25th is a national bank holiday. Please how does that change things? Will shops and restaurants be open on Monday? Also, I'm having a bit of difficulty finding out whether the cathedral will be giving tours that day. Please will you help educate me? Thank you!
A Bank holiday simply means that banks and post offices are closed. The Cathedral website should have intel about the tours. Very doubtful they’d not be having tours..
The August bank holiday will seem a lot like Labor Day weekend at home. And it'll be ideal to keep up with the calendar on the Cathedral website - https://www.canterbury-cathedral.org/
Like in the US for a holiday, basic businesses will be open (Gas stations, convenience shops, most restaurants) but many shops and businesses will be closed. Some places like Grocery stores may operate on reduced hours.
Those businesses that serve primarily tourists and travelers will likely be open, museums and historic sights will be open.
Canterbury Cathedral will be open, for a guided tour, I suspect, yes, they will be available, but some sights might run on fewer staff, and sometimes, crowds can be greater on a holiday than a normal Monday.
Thank you all! Your information is very helpful!. I think we'll try to stay an extra night in Canterbury to make sure we can see all that we want to see!
